Crate training is something that will greatly benefit your dog. It teaches them a lifeskill in the event they are ever hospitalized, need to travel as well as giving them clear boundaries not to destroy your house. So many dogs that I’ve seen in the shelter ended up there because they weren’t given structure early on.
I encourage every dog owner to start their puppies off in the crate!
10 Tips to Successful Crate Training
- I prefer a wire crate so the dog will be able to see his or her surroundings.
- Make crate training a game and your dog will love to play along.
- Don't rush "closing the door." Your dog should want to get INTO the crate, not out!
- Use lots of treats, rewards and praise when your dog is in the crate, make that an event!
- Keep the training short and successful.
- Feed your dog in the crate so he will associate it with a positive experience.
- Don't open the crate door when the dog is acting up / barking. Wait for him to calm down first!
- Try to teach the dog the crate a few times early in the day before expecting your dog to sleep in the crate.
- Always give your dog plenty of potty breaks so that they won't mess in the crate.
- Properly size your crate. A crate that is too big will defeat the purpose.
Spend a few months teaching your dog structure through the use of a crate and you'll have a lifetime of happiness with him!
