I will admit this video is from a while ago and I’m really trying to catch up. Schmoo is about 15 months or so old here and you can see where we are in our training.
The heeling is coming along as well as teaching the new command TARGET. This is a good command for many sports and obedience things. Target means look at whatever is in front of you. It can be a toy, an obstacle, a person, anything. The only caveat is that you can’t get it until I tell you.
You’ll see in this training that I work with distractions and even calling him off of the toy. This is a great drill to teach a dog and a super impressive one once they get it. Just take your time. You can see from the first part of this video how the heeling is coming along. I believe in taking a long time to make sure things work as they should. I don’t like using things or rushing a dog to get where I want him to be.
As you know, the training process is extremely enjoyable… I savor it and I think my dogs personality shows that!
