The Joy of Living With a Second Chance Dog
When I was looking for a second dog and companion to my female GSD 4 years ago, I saw a craigslist ad for a male GSD/BorderCollie mix. I had already tried a few rescue organizations in my area, but that didn’t work out. I was told by the owner that he (the owner and his dog) had been living on the streets but was now living in a home and he could no longer keep his dog. When he saw my GSD and me he felt relieved and when I began to hand over $150, as advertised, to him he told me $75 would be fine and that he was just happy that his dog was going to a good home. Over the next two weeks my new dog Max proceeded to climb over my fences and run down the street not understanding his new situation. But within a month he was solidly bonded with me and has been the most loyal dog I have had in 60 years. He is a total velcro-dog and follows me everywhere. He became quick friends with my 16 lb. tomcat and loves to control the animals of the house in his typical border collie-esque fashion, but always deferring to me when I ask.

Shelter life is so hard for dogs to comprehend. It’s wonderful that you bonded with each other quickly, even though your first couple weeks were trying.

What a lovely looking boy! Sounds like you are both blessed to have found each other. And what a blessing for his former owner! It sounds like Max was raised with plenty of love, even if without the material comforts and security. It must have been very difficult for his owner to give him up, but the fact that he let you have him for 1/2 of what he had been asking just goes to show the love he had for him and his gratitude that his dog would have a good home. I love stories with happy endings!
