I obsess about what I feed my dog and treats are no different. There are a couple that I have found that sound good, but there’s nothing like making your own. So, years ago I set on the path of making my own cookies / biscuits for my dogs. At that time my SharPei named Silly was my whole world. That’s why I named these cookies after him.
I always read the ingredients before I buy my dogs food or treats… Usually I’m disappointed. So, buying treats for my dogs is always tough. Many years ago I started working on a recipe for my dogs’ treats. I developed this recipe. I’ve probably redone the recipe 20 times, but this is awesome… Tried and tested by me, my friends and of course many dogs.
I make them in pretty good sized batches and give my dogs one before bed and one in the morning. No problems with digestion, upset stomach or itching. I hope your dogs will love them as much as mine do. By the way, you can eat them too. I do all the time!
Here is the recipe:
I’ve kept this recipe secret for years. During that time I’ve perfected it and baked these cookies for every dog I’ve owned.
This recipe is called the Secret Silly Cookie Recipe in honor of my dear Sharpei Silly that was my dog for over 8 years. He and I did so much fun stuff together. It’s because of him that I started Bound Angels and learned so much about dogs. He is the catalyst to so much -and he is the dog that raised Goofy for his first year.
I hope you’ll make these cookies for your dog(s) and share the love that I learned from Silly. I hope you’ll carry that love through to all dogs that you meet.
2 cups filtered water
2/3 cup organic honey
1/3 cup coconut oil
1 cup organic almond butter
4 cups organic oat flour
1 cup organic oat bran
1 cup organic rolled oats
3/4 cup organic shredded coconut
Mix all the dry ingredients in one bowl and put aside.
Mix all wet ingredients in another bowl.
Heat the water in order to melt the honey and coconut oil. Mix till well mixed.
Begin mixing the dry ingredients (either by hand or in a mixer) and slowly mix in the wet ingredients.
As you blend the ingredients you will see if the mixture needs more flour or oat bran to get the proper consistency as shown in the video.
There are a couple of ways to proceed:
- Roll out a softball sized ball of dough on a floured cutting board. Use your favorite shape cookie cutter. Place cookies on un-greased cookie sheet.
- Use a teaspoon to fill the silicone molds, as I do in this video.
- Use a piping bag to squeeze the batter into the forms.
I bake for 35 minutes then leave them in the overn to cool for about 10. Then remove them and let them cool to room temperature for a few hours. I like to check the cookies to make sure they are crisp.
If not, turn off the oven and leave the cookies in there overnight. I think dogs like the cookies a little more crunchy than chewy!
