How should I take the toys from my dog after the play is over?

I did a big mistake early with my dog after she learned to give me the toys. After our play session was over I just collected the toys from her. She quickly learned what’s going to happen if I start to grab the toys from ground, and she refuses to give me the toys.

After I realized my mistake I started to incorporate high value treats. It works, but now if I have no treats with me, she refuses to give me the ball/s.

I’m wondering how could I fix my mistake and what is the correct way of taking the toys from our dogs.

My dog is a 1,5 years old female Rottweiler.

Yay Rottweilers Unite!! Does she know leave it? I’m pretty sure Robert has a leave it lesson. It is possible that she is lacking structure. If that is the case it would be showing in other areas as well — then the issue would be that she is lacking structure and not giving up the toy would be a symptom — in that case you would want to fix the first as opposed to the latter. Over here we do it one of 3 ways: (1) just do it (most common), (2) tell her leave it (very rarely), (3) exchange it for another toy if this is part of play or training and the play/training is continuing.

Yes she knows leave it and her obedience is great. She has couple of toys but she is doing this with only one type of ball (I have 4 of those balls). She can give me other toys with no problem tho.

You have to change what she is predicting as what happens next. Start collecting them at random times and not going in or stopping play. Perhaps start a whole different game with just one toy. You could bring just the one toy out at a time for a while. Not sure of your exact set up, but you could let the dog in the house or put her in the car and then pick up the toys too. She has to see that it is not always the same sequence of events.

You could work on an “out” command as well! But I like what @bethmw said. Ie Teach her that just because she brings you the toy, it doesn’t mean the game is over. I also have a cue (I say cue not command because he doesn’t need to do anything) the second play, training, or food is finsibed. I say “all finished” and that way Hugo knows it’s over. Once I say that, I absolutely never let him continue the game. Eventually he gets bored.
