Good afternoon. I just got my German Shepard puppy on 2/11/2022. I may have “overfed” myself with too many youtube lessons. He is 8 weeks old and he is learning his name already. I am looking at where to start. Please send me in the right direction because I am a little overwhelmed with what I should be doing.

    Gary,

Welcome to the site. We have a Welcome page that puts the most important lessons you should focus on first.

You can find this page in the menu under the members tab or in the lessons page.

I got my GSD at 11 weeks. One of the first things I did was put him on a leash whenever he was in the house. It let him know how things work, and that I was the one in charge of him. It will help establish structure with him. When you take him outside, perhaps put him on a longer line so he has more freedom to explore and encourage him to go to the bathroom outside. When he’s not leashed in the house, I’d recommend crating him. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the information out there.

Welcome to the group and congratulations on your new pup! The Welcome page is a good start. You can also look at the Ultimate Puppy Series under Lessons and see Robert’s first several lessons with two young puppies. These puppies have very different personalities, so pick the one closest to your pup’s. But most of all right now, have fun with the little one and give him lots of love and structure. The WHAT you teach him is not nearly as important as the HOW and consistency. Be patient and fair, use luring so that training is fun, and set the pup up for success by watching him when he is loose and crating him when you can’t watch him. Always remember that he is still a very little puppy and be patient with him. And have fun! This is a great group to ask any questions you may have, and Robert is there with the Ask Me Anything twice a week.

Welcome! I think one of the key things I did with my GSD in the beginning (from 8 weeks) was hand feed meals, I hand fed most of the meal while working on basic training and then fed the remainder in her crate. Lots of great info and support on this site 🙂
