HI Robert&Janet! I feed my GSD, Harpo, kibbles with canned food (half/half). Once in a while, my friend brings over fresh beef liver. Harpo loves it. Is it OK to give her fresh, raw meat once in a while? I also mix in salmon oil, kelp and suppliments for joints with her meals. What is your opinion about what I’m giving her? I would like to give her fresh meat as a meal/treat once in awhile since she enjoys it so much. I’m so happy I joined your membership, Thank you Robert for sharing . your expertise and extra thanks to Janet in the background helping out; very kind and soothing voice!

I have a female, 3 yr GSD/pitt mix, Goldie. I work with a foster group in DC. She is a wonderful foster sister to all the dogs we take in. We live on the top floor of an apartment building. About 9 months ago while fostering a dog recovering from a shotgun wound, a corgi with few leash manners lunged into the elevator we were in and went after the foster. Since then, Goldie becomes fixated when the elevator doors open, and will explode at unfamiliar dogs. She is appropriately trained on the e-collar (working level 4). I stand facing her between her and the door. She’s in a sit

Hello, Toby & Daisy are getting alone fine and I do micromanage their playtime. Question is Daisy is small JRT and she started resource guarding her food, chewing objects and especially my husband & me from Toby. I started correcting her gently with my voice & e collar with sound only since few months now but it is not working. What else can I do? I fear Toby will defend himself and create a tragic… cannot even want to say it without chocking up… oh dear. G

16-week-old male Husky. Have had him for 2 months now. Before joining the community (a month after getting him), I was “training” him based on pieces of training I’d seen from other trainers on YouTube. Other than hand feeding, I didn’t do ANYTHING that’s in the week 1 puppy series… is it too late to start over with training? Not sure what this would even look like.

My nine month old springer spaniel was on her leash while walking down our front walkway. Somehow she got wrapped around the Christmas decorations and was spooked. She lost control when the 4 foot tall plastic candy canes started “chasing” her around the yard. Now when I bring out a leash or long line she is terrified. I think she is associating the leash with the fear of the candy canes. What do you suggest I do to remedy the fear of the leash? She is a field bread springer and has not had any trouble with bird or gun introduction.

I used to take my 2.5yo high-drive and skittish GSD to the outside of a fenced dog park to work on her reactivity. Now she is fine with neutral dogs. But when we pass a reactive dog/dog with lots of energy, her hackle goes up and she keeps looking at the dog. She maintains loose leash and doesn’t bark/lunge so I just keep walking. Should I do something when her hackle goes up? She totally ignores dogs behind a fence even if the dog is reactive. I started training my dog every day for a few minutes by a safe but energetic dog playing fetch with the owner’s permission. Will this help?

Hi Robert and Janet. Another follow up question regarding my GSD (now 1 YO)who was pulling/playing tug on leash while walking. We continue to work with a local trainer here in Michigan. I’ve been told that my dog needs to see me as the leader/in charge – in order to correct some of his reactivity towards dogs. What are some specific actions I personally can take that will begin to make him see me as the leader he can trust in these situations? I will continue to work with him in a classroom environment, but wondering what I can do beyond that. Many, many thanks! Lisa

Hello Robert, Thank you for answering my crate training question last week, it’s helpful to know that 2 years is a good length of time to crate train. Following up from that, how do you recommend I schedule her crate training? My 4 month Mal is currently in the crate all day and only comes out to train 3 times a day(15-30 mins) and once more to play with my other dogs before bed(30-60mins). Is that enough or too much time in crate? How much time should I leave her in the crate in between her training/play sessions? And, lastly, would her time outside of the crate increase as she gets older?

Hi guys! I am teaching my dog to back up in a circle around me. She already knows back up. She wants to go straight back so I am putting a leash around her belly to guide her hind end. Do you think this will work or should I try something else to help her back up in a circle? Thanks!
