Here are todays Q&A…

Hi, Robert! I finally became a member after watching all your free YouTube Videos while I was pregnant. You have been a tremendous help to our dog, I committed my whole pregnancy to setting him up for success to be around a baby (even if that meant training during labor haha). He’s been great with our little boy.

My questions are:

– how much exercise does my dog need every day on top of 4 training sessions? (1 yo GSD/Husky Rescue

– Do you give your dog’s free range of the yard?

I train service dogs and last year my Chocolate lab developed lung cancer and a service reached out to me and stated they had a service dog that needed to be re-homed and they thought I was perfect. I hunt, fish, camp and really active so I said sure. I have never had or worked with Mals but I am always up for adventures. I found out he did not play well with cats, pigs, horses, rams, deer, elk and so many other animals. I have really been working hard at the prey drive. Any suggestions?

Can you recommend any good in-depth sources to learn more about dog body language? My sister has a 5 year old son and she wants to get a puppy or dog soon. However, as a 5 year old, her son obviously doesn’t understand when to tone it down and leave the dog alone until it’s too late and the dog tries to nip at him. I’d like to help my sister out so she can understand dogs better so she can keep her son safe when she is supervising him as he is playing with their future dog.

Long story short my dog and I were very near a drive by shooting and had to run ti escape. Now he does not recover when a similar noise happens. My trainer said “he is broke and not repairable”. I am beside myself as I have tried to do EVERYTHING right. I exposed him to all kinds of noises, people, environments just not gunshots. He is with me everywhere I go. He has been doing nose work since he was 6 months, I used all of your videos for OB. Is it true I can’t rehabilitate him?

Dear Robert,

My name is Selva, i am working with a breeder in MA (von derby holland land) to get a show line west german puppy. After seeing your videos and podcast I am little nervous am i getting the puppy from good breeder. Do you have any suggestions where to get a good pup? Or the kennel where i am getting is a good one. Breeder has all pedigree papers. I am pretty new to this and hence reaching out for help. Thank you. Have a wonderful day.

Hey Robert would it be better for my 11-month English Cocker Spaniel to wear a prong collar with a tab indoors for me to make corrections for: jumping on sofa and chairs, jumping on counter to get food, chewing on furniture, scratching on floor, etc. If not, how can I stop these unwanted behaviors in the house? Thanks so much!

I have a 5-month old Vizsla puppy. She’s VERY food motivated, but she has low toy drive. She doesn’t have free access to tug toys or balls. We only play shortly after I take her out of her crate. If I throw a ball or frisbee, she will chase it, but she’ll rarely grab it. Sometimes she won’t chase at all. She’s also not big on tug. I try to keep play sessions short and end them when she’s still interested in the toys. How can I increase her motivation to play with toys?

Hey Robert Working on the early stages of IPO tracking/scent detection for my 17mo GSD. Any comments/experience on using the “field tracking box” method? They put four flags in the grass and start from there. This is different than the scent detection boxes people make at home. This method felt somewhat easier than building a scent box. Any comments, can’t wait for you tracking/scent series.

My GS is turning 1 on 4th of July and want to take her camping soon for first time. She still gets excited seeing dogs and there will be plenty there so would it be good idea to bring her to train around them and desensitize her to dogs with high value rewards and using a long leash? Also do you recommend any bug n tick repellent or anything else I should bring with me on the trip for her? Thank you for the amazing site! God bless you!

My child, 6month old pup, and I are considering a road trip to visit my mom. I would have to fly back home in the middle of the trip, leaving my child and pup w/ my mom for another week. My pup won’t get much training during that week, but lots of socialization. Would one week of little training derail progress with my puppy? Currently we train 1-2 hours per day and do “real life situations” training throughout the day. I don’t want my pup to lose progress so I wonder if I should go with them…

I have a 3yr old GSD intact male, who has completed his BH at 18 months. He is very friendly with people passed his therapy dog assessment. He no longer does therapy work and I am now doing a full IGP 1. In your experience, does protection work make a balanced dog more likely to bite when working with a professional helper. Are there any signs I should watch for in his behavior that this is not a good thing for him. What extra precaution if any would you now take with this dog.

Greetings from Alsace, France. Thank you for the great content in the member section! I have a 2 years old Dutchie, intact male, named Pogo. He barks at other dogs during play. This happens when the other dog he’s playing with stops playing or running. He really enjoys being chased and running with dogs. If they don’t move he will bark right in their face and be really obnoxious until they start playing again. It’s bad manner and annoying. How can I correct and fix this? Thank you Robert!
