How do I potty train a reactive 4 year old dog that’s not crate trained?
Debby
Hello, I have a 2 year old female Malinois. She is reactive on the line. She is not aggressive but very insecure and anxious. Now in the last 3 months she has started barking at people (some she knows, some she doesn’t) and moving backwards. She won’t go near these people. She backs away and barks but still waddles her tail. She also squeaks while she does this. Sometimes she suddenly does this to people she has known since she was puppy. And other times not. However, I’m not sure how to approach this. I made a video with someone that i know she does this every time. Can i send you the video?

At what age is a dogs behaviors are pretty much hardwired to where training may not change unwanted behaviors but now is more about management? I have a 3 year old pure bred German Shepherd I rescued, who has had some previous training. But I feel could be sharper and more structured. At the same time not sure if I would be expecting too much from a 3 year old GSD.

Today while doing some long line training, a dog was walking by and he was actually in the middle of the zoomies. Martins leash snapped as we went to go towards the other dog and it was the worst case cinario. One nervous owner with a tight leash and a dog that had been attacked before and Martin in in a abnormally wild mood, leash snapping and a minute of nose to nose and I new what was next as the other owner tried pulling his dog away. Boom, fight starts as I’m running I grab my dog by sliding on the asphalt to them. Other dog has a cut in his ear Martin is fine. i Don’t know what to do

Hello Robert and family. I have now been living with a malinois for about 2.5 years and it has been a fantastic experience and a long journey. What has surprised me the most isn’t the drive or the toughness but The sweetness they can show, the control you have to have over your feelings when training, the feinschmecker you want to become in training one. One has to be more committed to a malinois than most dogs. For me who have my background from more stubborn and independent dogs I had to go into this very open minded. Which dog has surprised you the most and how. Best regards from Norway

My English Staffy and I, Gunner, have recently been working with a handler who contracts doing bomb detection. It’s been a ton of fun just learning scent work and he’s actually really good at it and has been excelling, impressing the trainer. Unfortunately he is a show line Staffy and doesn’t have the endurance, but we enjoy it a lot! I will be getting another dog in the next 2 yrs (either a Shepard or Lab) do you have any suggestions for a brand new person getting into something like this? Maybe some other resources? I’ve been trying to pick everyone’s brains to get as much info as I can! TY!

Good morning, I volunteer at a shelter and we took 6 out of 30 small dogs from a very bad hoarding case. You can not touch them, they are so scared and will even poop on you when you pick them up. I put them in the little yard with long leashes to drag. I just sit there and they hide in the corner. What should I be doing with these dogs? How much time do you give them at a shelter? When would you know if this is not adoptable? A few have acted like they’ll bite if you pick them up but don’t. They just freeze in the kennel when you put the collars and leashes on to go outside. Thanks

Hello Robert; I have 2 pitbull & oeb mix dogs, a 2 yr old female and a 1 yr old male. They both seek out playing together. The female is dominant and definitely willing and able to correct him as needed. *Except when they’re playing hard. He came to me at 9 months old without any bite inhibition. He has learned bite inhibition with humans but hasn’t generalized it and keeps leaving marks on her when they play. She is in drive when they play and doesn’t even seem to feel it. I can’t tell from watching them when it’s happening. Any ideas for dealing with this beside just keeping them apart?

Hi Robert,
thank you for all you’ve done to help me with my boy via your phone consults. he’s doing great and the food aggression managed and no longer visible. My 7 month old predominantly German Shepherd pup is so sweet and very well socialized to other people and has had good play with 5 or 6 stable dogs. But since he has turned 7 months, he has become quite reactive and guarding in the house. Barking at the sound of a pin drop and overreacting if anything in the home environment changes. Ex a bag left outside, a familiar person now wearing a hat etc and ONLY at home. Your thoughts. Thx!

Hi Robert, my 2 yr GSD (female) occasionally resource guards her food from my sister 7month old male dachshund. This is not everytime and they have been known to happily (accidentally) share from the same bowl. How should I respond, should I reprimand her, or is she in her right to do this with it being her home. If I correct her will it increase her feeling and need to resource guard. They get on very well otherwise and he does not challenge her when she growls

Hello Robert, I have a 3yo female Malinois that I rescued about 1 month ago. Things are going great, she is sweet and very smart, but also scared of sudden movements, loud noises, overall insecure. She doesn’t know how to play, and is nervous even just seeing something like a tug in my hands. I think bringing out her play drive a bit more would help with her confidence, how would you work on getting an insecure dog to play, or should I look for other ways to increase her confidence (beyond working on basic obedience, which is going well)?
