If training a dog using the word GOOD as a bridge word, should a different word be used for praising correct behavior? Would it be confusing to the dog by saying GOOD DOG, GOOD BOY…in response to a desired behavior? Thank you.

I have a 4.5 month old Maremma puppy. She can follow basic commands but actually doesn’t seem to understand the word “no.” You mention somewhere teaching that concept but I can’t find it. Please tell me how to train that basic negative concept to her.

I got a female Shepherd/Husky puppy from a rescue in October and she will be 6mo next week. We have a set of 4 stairs going outside to our backyard, as well as a couple tables in the backyard (one is 4+ feet) Sometimes she will jump up and off these tall tables. I don’t allow it but she still manages. Should I be concerned about her growth plates? I don’t run the dog or have any other stairs in my house, but she was allowed on and off the bed for a few months. Thanks, new member first ask

Hi Robert, my staffie girl is almost 11 months and is starting to become a bit testy and moody when it comes to training. She is a bit nervy so if she doesn’t want to train and knows that a correction is coming for not listening she’ll tuck her tail and run and hide. I assure you she hasn’t been abused. She has always loved training and we put a lot of effort of making it fun. How do I teach her that she has to listen, without being too harsh on her and destroy our relationship? Thank you

I dog a new water bowl for my 1 year old golden retriever. I got an automatic water bowl because he was drinking a lot of water throughout the day. With the new water bowl he won’t drink out of it at all. Any suggestions or tips will be much appreciated.

Robert, I’m having to board Nomad (10mos Rottie) next month for a week. I have the option to minimally “socialize” him and have his exercise done by way of on-leash walks and hikes instead of playing in the yard with the other dogs. This facility is highly rated and only allows 20 dogs on site at a time and playtime is under constant supervision. Since we’re training IPO, would it be wise to keep him “neutral” for the week or does it matter if he plays with other dogs?

Hi Robert. My female 6 month old White Swiss Shepherd is extremely reactive to cars. She lunges and attempts to chase them. We have been working on walking with loose leash (with moderate success) and healing. It is impossible to avoid the cars because we must walk on the street for daily exercise. (no side walks or fenced in yard). Please advise me on what to do before she injures herself or me. Would now be a good time to introduce a prong collar for this? Thank you for your time.

I have a 6 mos old Belgian Malinois. we have been using your tutorials to help with obedience, luring, etc. We took our dog to a reputable doggy daycare center to help him learn socialization skills with other dogs as well as play, exercise, and be around full time monitors to social with other people. By the second week he began to urinate on other dogs and by week three he attacked a female dog and is not welcome at this time. What are our options. He is not neutered as yet. Please advise

I have a 3 months old gsd.He eats his poop and when i try to stop him and pull his leash he become very aggressive and start groaning and barking. What should i do???

Hey Robert, I have a 14mo male gsd and I was wondering if I should take him on a short walk directly after playing fetch in order to give his body a cool down period. I figured this would be better than going from strenuous exercise to completely stationary. I plan on giving water after the walk so that he’s not breathing heavy and drinking. Also I’m absolutely loving the discussions and new features, you and Alin are really hustling and it shows. I am very thankful to be a member here

I’m working with a young SChH lll import (female imported about 10 mo ago) who is reactive to people and dogs walking by at the park. She appears to be in defense drive rather than prey drive. Q what to do to stop this reactivity. How is this a different process than a reactive pet or shelter dog?

We have 11 months old Mal mix, I have been working with her on holding different objects, she can hold, change position, bring it, sit and out it, but only when I initiate the hold by giving her the object. I don’t know how to get her to pick it up when I throw it. How do I connect the “go get it” with Hold and Bring. She will go after her toys and sticks and items we play with, but when I throw any item i’ve worked with her on Hold she just stands there.

When taking a walk with my 14 week old Groenendaeler puppy and my partner with the buggy of our 1 year old son, the focus of our puppy is completely on the buggy/baby. We got him to walk next to it but are unsure if this extreme focus on something other then the person with the leash is good. The walk is smooth when he walks next to the buggy but he pulls extremely hard on his leash to get right next to the buggy and ignores everything else. Will this get better or do we correct him?

I have a 6mo shepherd/husky female and I can’t decide if I should put her on large breed puppy food or keep her on the regular puppy food. She seems to be borderline too big for regular food and borderline too small for large breed. (Her Mom is approx 65lbs)

*she was on regular puppy food when I got her then after a few bags I put her on a large breed but switched Back after a bag cuz I noticed her nails were peeling and looking dull instead of shiny. Perhaps from a lack of fat? Thank you

Hey Robert, I have a 6 month cocker spaniel that I bring to the park everyday. He’s doing well there not chasing birds, runners, etc. However, in the house I’ve stopped fetch and tug, which has helped him settle. Is it best not to give him rope toys and chew toys with squeakers inside the house, since it incites play? Thanks so much!

I have a 6 month old labradoodle with an extreme amount of drive. When channeled she performs very well, with one of our biggest accomplishments being the place command. She will place successfully with me remaining out of sight for 10 minutes, so I know self control is in there somewhere. She will also spend 30 continuous minutes on zoomies, even after hours of exercise. My trainer suggested starting ecollar work at 7 months. Is this too soon? How do you gauge a dog’s readiness? Thank you!

Last week I had asked a question about preventing leash reactivity and a couple days ago I went through exactly what I was trying to prevent for the first time. I went on a walk with my 5mo GSD in a highly trafficked walking trail loop (first time at this place). At the start of the walk she was fine with the people walking past us, from behind and in front. At the end of the walk she began to freak out pulling, barking and lunging. Especially when someone was coming from behind. What should I do?
