Member Questions AMA -3/6/21

OK, guys here’s the questions… I put March 6 instead of the 5th cause they are going up quite late.

Hi Robert, Hope you’re well and safe .my six month old German Shepherd ,usually very good behaved and his obedience is also very good , he has suddenly , out of nowhere ,started to jump at me and grabbing my arm, with his mouth, softly but still unacceptable behaviour and it’s too aggressive for my liking, he is 28kg so not small boy . I don’t know why it’s doing it but what is there I can do to stop it

I’m a new member So not sure if you have addressed this question before – Diesel GMS NEVERS Pees of Potty when we go on a day trip – He will hold it until we get back and has held it up to 12 hours – He has done this since small puppy till now 14 months – I get that he will go sooner or later BUT he has had accidents in his crate (Which I know is unusual) – Any ideas how to get past this ?

Blue is a 1 year old female, 50% Mal 25% GMD and 25% Great Pyrenees, she loves to grab things that belong to us (shoe, glove) and sleep with it, she puts her head on it like she is guarding it, she doesn’t rip or destroy it, I think she even guards us when she jumps on the bed in the morning, rests her head on, or near my head and falls asleep, she doesn’t cuddle. I use “Leave it” when I see her taking something and I take away items she took. Does this need a stronger correction? E-collar?

Jessica

6mo GSD Female working line. Very high drive and confident. Lately she has started to use her mouth on me when she just doesn’t want to comply or acting kind of bratty. A lot when trying to put a collar or leash on/off. She will stand perfectly still and let me when she wants to, but otherwise will grab me/today bruising my hand. The grab/biting is becoming more frequent, what is the best way for me to handle? I have tried a few different methods (positive w/treats and grab scruff with stern no)

Hi Robert, I am getting a Cane Corso in a few days (10 weeks old). How would you go about training a dog to slowly go down stairs and at what age? Breeder recommends no stairs ever, and I am able to carry her up and downstairs even when she gets to 120lbs, but that seems like an unreasonable solution. I’m looking forward to implementing your training, thank you and God bless.

Hey Robert, I’m proofing my recall with a ecollar. my question is, if I have a helper out with me for a distraction can I stem my dog as soon as he starts running to the helper and then recall him and reward for compliance or do I need to recall first and then stem? Basically is it fair to stem when he takes off or is it not fair because I haven’t given him the recall command yet. Thanks 👍🏼

How do you transition the down on the platform to a down in the heel position?

Tristan

Hey Robert! I notice in a lot of your videos you say when the dog starts sniffing this means he’s tuning out. I generally correct the sniffing and reward when he refocuses on me if we’re training or if he’s doing it on a walk. My question is: when is it ok to relax and let the dog sniff around? Should it only be corrected in training circumstances or also when on general walks, etc?

Hi Robert, I have been thinking about getting pet insurance for my new 12 week old GSD puppy and was hoping you could talk a little bit more about your experience with TruPanion. I have seen so many mixed reviews online, but have heard you mention that you really like it. Could you share some of the pros and cons with us? Thank you!! Melissa

Hi Robert, we have a 6m old belgian malinois x dutch shepherd, she is very well behaved in the house, crate trained nicely, structured with food and play and great recall. We are currently working on her reactivity problem with other dogs. Socialisation has been more difficult due to strict uk lockdown laws. She is ok at a distance and we provide distraction techniques to keep her focused on us, but up close she barks aggressively accompanied with lead lunging. What can we do to help her? TIA.

Hi Robert! I have a very well trained 15mo/F mal and just brought in a now 12week/M mal and have been crating and bringing them out one at a time. Old one comes out first no matter what we are doing. The question is, does the location of the crate matter? I started off with the older in my room new in living room, then each week I put the crates closer. Now they are right next to each other. Should I keep them apart longer? I don’t want them to fixate on each other when we are walking together later on

My bully and friend’s older GSD like to play. The shepherd will engage him with a play bow and they tumble around and chase each other. My friend worries her shepherd will get hurt in his old age, she refuses to keep him on leash. I’m proofing my dog to recall away from the shepherd when they start to play (he is always on a long line) Does this make me the fun police? I feel bad because they enjoy their engagement with each other but prioritize safety

Hello thanks for all the knowledge and keep up the good work! I have two malinois, a four-year-old who is perfectly sociable and a 14-month-old girl who is super enthusiastic, mainly for work but not very sociable and more dominant. We are going to have a baby at the end of August, my question would be if you could approach the topic of a baby’s arrival, what tips can you give or how can we prepare the dogs here at home so that the arrival is well accepted by everyone? Thanks

Hey Robert, I bring my 8 month Cocker Spaniel to the park almost everyday to help him socialize and see people, dogs, ducks etc…My question is as we walk by the dog park, I let him look at the other dogs through the fence. The dogs come up to him as he gets excited and wants to play, but I don’t let him into the dog park. By keeping him on leash, is this helping him to learn how to play with good manners without letting him run around with the other dogs? Thanks so much!

Is there a good/better way to introduce a dog to a bark collar..or do I just put it on him. I forgot to mention that I am going to use the bark collar when driving in the car with our male great Pyrenees because he growl, barks and lunges at the windows if we pass anyone walking , biking or whatever.

My Husky/GSD mix isn’t interested in treats/toys that motivate him at home when we are on a hiking trail or at a park. Despite the lack of interest in those items, he still obeys my commands, just in a mildly distracted state. (ie he’ll sit but be looking around, he’ll recall but not in front of me). I’d like to build more focus and excitement for the obedience in those settings. Is he just not ready for the level of distraction in those places or does his personality require another approach?

Hi Robert, so thankful to have newly joined as a member. First time mal owner here & I want to do the best I can in training myself to raise her into a superb dog. I think I got the early morning release from crate, potty, training, then meal routine down; but during midday I’m keeping her in-crate for about 3 sometimes 4 hours. Is this the right move? during the night i’ll try to sleep through.. Also, sometimes she will mess in the crate and drink her own pee..? :/ appreciate you so much!

I saw your QA the other day of dogs off leash running up to you. My puppy is getting more and more interested in dogs (which I don’t like), I think because dogs just keep running/walking up to us in the park. I let my puppy say hi/play sometimes (mainly as I just don’t know how to handle the situation). Should I just walk off and let the lead bring her away?
