Today i passed the Begleithundeprüfung (dog companion test), that is the foundation for ipo/igp. He is my first dog and a 2 year old shelter Malinois (70%) x Podenco (spanish sighthound mix). It was a close call though, the technical exercises were very good, the heeling poor and unfocused. He has a low ball drive and good food drive, is an insecure and distracted dog in general. I try to work with short playful sessions and food rewards. If i got food in my hand he heels good and focused. How do i get more motivation in general and especially without food? Any Exercises? Danke, lieber Robert!

Hello Robert and family. My malinois Kavli has just turned one year old and have focus for just a very short time. If there was a window into her brain you would probably see a bunch of very happy pink and bright yellow butterflies flying around listening to let there be Rock by ac/dc.
I have not done much hard obedience with her but done some exercises to get her more calm and collected. Search and hand target plus tracking. We have now started to do a patrol exercise, much like search and rescue. She does good after running off some steam. Do you have any good exercises for increased focus.

Our 2 year old female American Bully loves treats when we’re inside. We can train and she goes nuts for the treats. Beef lung is her favorite. But for some reason anytime we try training outdoors she loses all want for any treats. I’ve tried beef lung, hot dog weiners, cheese, etc. She just doesn’t seem to want anything. I’ve tried other rewards like toys or squeaker toys which she usually likes inside but nothing seems to work. Is there anything I can do for this or are there any other types of rewards that I can mark for her?

Robert, Your response was exactly what I thought. I see the difference in the dogs you’re filming. Goofy, is trained where Dwayne is still learning. I agree with your answer and method of teaching the word and it’s ok to repeat in the beginning, teaching and learning stages. As it’s incredibly unfair to correct behavior if the dog doesn’t know what’s being asked of it. My professor, she has a PhD in animal behavior & PhD in Ethology. She is my mentor, sponsored me for the IACP years ago you & her worked together years ago, she also recommended i take your classes after I saw your podcast TY

Hello, Robert. Hope you are well.
Our 5-month-old rescued Malinois/German Shepherd mix girl is a very sweet and friendly puppy, progressing well with regular basic training. We live on 5 remote acres, and it’s harder to train her to socialize. We tried to take her to public places. Recently, we took her downtown, and she became aggressive – barking at every dog and even little kids, which scared us a lot—totally opposite behavior from just a month ago, on the same trip. We also plan to have her as a protective /farming dog when she becomes an adult. What would be your advice?

Hi Robert, 8 month old mal misses ball or tug on occasion and accidentally bites hand. How can I teach him to be more precise. Should I ask him to sit and stay before letting him have the toy. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
