So, this session is from earlier this year.. I swear I’m trying to catch up. Here Schmoo is about 14 months old, I tell you that to give you some perspective on his maturity and where he is as far as learning. I really like to take it slow and make the actual journey fun and enjoyable. It’s never my idea to rush through training just to get it done. For me the most enjoyable part is this – and if I had it my way, I’d do this forever.
You can see he’s still very “puppy-ish” and I love that. He has a strong desire to play and play and never stop. He still treat corrections like they are play, which is great. He bounces back after mistakes and tries again. you can’t ask for a better dog than that!
In this session we cover a lot… We always start out with FOCUS and HEEL. We work through DOWN, STAND as well as the HOLD exercise, walking BACK, RECALL, FRONTS, SIT IN MOTION as well as TUG and control and a few other things. Now in this session I do it all with Schmoo… almost everything he knows. There’s a time to do that and there’s a time to just focus on one or two things.
I like doing a collective training with my dog to make it fun and connect with him, it’s basically a review and play session. If I have something specific I’m working on, then I will take that and focus on that and THEN play…. or even PLAY and then focus on that ONE THING… I don’t like to mix too much new stuff in with stuff he’s having fun with – it kinda puts a damper on things. That’s not to say I NEVER do that, I never use the term NEVER as it relates to training. You have to learn your dog and see how he or she best learns and make your decisions from there.
I hope you’re enjoying this Journal Sessions as much as I am enjoying making them!
