We’re back in this lesson with Sonny, the Black Germnna Shepherd who had some aggression issues to other dogs. We worked with Sonny and his dad Ben to redirect him and teach him what we expect of him.
Sonny’s behavior switches between play and aggression / frustration. Some would ask, “Why not let him play with another dog?” And the answer to that is simple…. we don’t allow dogs with bad manners to meet other dogs, even if they are not aggressive. The reason for that is because we don’t want them to set off another dog and get bit. If he approaches the wrong dog in this state, he will set off a dog and get bit. Also, his reckless abandon to get to the other dogs doesn’t respect Ben’s position as his owner.
My goal is always to strive for a neutral dog around other dogs, not playful, not aggressive, not reactive – ONLY NEUTRAL! That is safe for everyone. Good manners come through obedience!
