This week’s lesson will be a huge help to so many people. Now, you may not realize it at first, but there are so many mistakes that everyone makes… and you won’t notice them till you see someone else doing it.
The most common mistake is repeating commands and then changing the words. You’ll see Ellen do it a few times and you’ll see how Mellow responds… Sometimes it’s better to be a little more patient than to confuse the dog.
I think the value in this lesson is that the mistakes that are made here are so common, but commonly overlooked. I’m ecstatic to catch this on film. The key thing is that at this point in training, the 6th week / 6th lesson, you know what you “think” the dog should be doing, and you really think the dog should know it, so logically you get frustrated. We ALL have done this.
Let me give you some great advice, your dog is not trained for a long time. Your dog will learn some things and forget some things…. They will also confuse some things – so be patient. It frustrates me when people tell me their 3 month old puppy is trained and knows how to blah blah blah! Your puppy is learning for the first couple of years, at LEAST the first year. So take it easy, be patient and keep things light and fun!
