Heeling can be a boring task, but it shouldn’t be. There are several reasons I like to teach my dog to be comfortable on both sides. One primary reason is “just because.” I think it’s fun for the dog to be able to walk on either side as well as between your legs. Even if it doesn’t serve any purpose in competitive sports, I believe the dog has fun and that bonds you more in training. Another reason is that I read that heeling on one side can lead to physiological issues in the dog’s neck and spine, so there’s that! I would rather just be safe and do it.
In either case, this who session we worked on teaching the position of HEEL on left right and center and MOST IMPORTANTLY how to switch between the sides. The benefit for all of you in these Schmuley Journal posts is that you see me teaching it. When I started my online teaching Goofy was already pretty close to perfect, but Schmoo is on the road, so it’s a great opportunity to tag along. You’ll see the mistakes and how we resolve them – one of the most fun parts of training.
Enjoy this lesson… See you soon!
