So, I see everyone is loving tagging along on my journey with Schmoo. I have a bunch more of these videos that I’m going to fast track for you into the members’ section.
In this one I talk a lot about corrections. I posted a very short version of this on social, but for some reason didn’t post it here. This video lesson is a lot more in detail about the concept. Bottom line is, we want everything to be positive with our dogs / puppies, but MUST understand that there is nothing wrong with correcting them. They learn when we help them learn. There is ZERO training without corrections and you’ll see what I mean by “correcting” in the first few minutes of this lesson.
Correcting can be as simple as a verbal NO, to tell the dog; “that was wrong.” It can be withholding the reward, it can be a leash pop, it can be anything that helps the dog understand that he needs to try something different. We can also take it to a higher level if we want to compete, for example in a focus heel. I don’t really cover that “detail aspect” too much in this (I will in a future video) – but the bottom line is, it’s up to you what level you want to achieve with your dog.
Even when I start to get picky on obedience or other skills, my goal is always to be fair to my dog. Does he understand what I’m asking? If not, we go back to that lesson… then when I’m sure, I can add a correction. How do I know? I learn to read my dog. Watch these journal lessons, I think they are great and I wish I had done them with Goofy, but I think this is Schmoo’s special feature here on the site. Many more to come!!! ENJOY!
