How do I help my dog with stranger danger if I don’t want to impose on strangers by getting myself and my somewhat reactive dog close to them? I don’t want to be rude.

Hi Robert, Understanding every pup is different, not to overtrain, and letting a pup be a pup, in general what are some good guidelines for goals/achievements for a pup that’s reached 5 months old? Thanks! PS…I joined your site 3 months before bringing my pup home at 8wks. So thankful for everything I’ve learned here. I feel he’s done well (too much accomplished to list here) but I’d be interested in comments such as at 5 months, what would be essential training achievements and what would be nice to have on top of that. Thanks!

Neil

Hi Robert! Archie, my 2 year old Cockapoo, can bark on command, but only when he is facing me and looking at me. How would I teach him to bark on command when facing something else? I’m asking just to keep progressing with him, not to be a nuisance to my neighbors.

How do you build engagement with minimal food or toy drive? Adopted a 3 yr old female Malinois 3 months ago. Great dog with very high prey drive. When outside, she scopes out squirrels and ignores me completely. She likes clicker training indoors, but all bets are off outside with the squirrels. She’s calm for a Mal and doesn’t have a high play drive. Plays for 5-10 minutes before losing interest (I’ve tried many toys/games). Treats work for training indoors, but she’d ignore bacon outside. My trainer hasn’t been helpful. How do I compete with this prey drive? Her brain is just gone.

Hi, I have a female mal, 3 years, do you have a video of how to help when they are to stressed? I need mine to be able to walk in a mall, but she is not calm or comfortable, but I need for her to be able to handle it we do agility and some day she will be at a big event and needs to handle it.

Robert, in a prior ama I wrote that I lost my Mal, Loki, in a freak accident. He was the perfect dog—non-reactive, neutral, and always down whether it was a 14-mile run or cuddling and watching movies. I got him during COVID and had the time to really focus on training him. He was incredibly loyal to me, glued to my hip. I want to get another

Mal in the future, but I’m worried I won’t be able to train and bond as deeply while working a full-time job. Do you have any advice for raising a Mal puppy while working? Also do you have advice on opening up to a new dog after losing my ‘soul dog’ Loki?

Ernie

I have a 10 yr old shepherd and in may i brought home a 2yr old malinois. They been walking together perfect for the past 4 months. The issue is as soon as I go to bring them in the shepherd wants to attack the malinois inside..the mal has been in a kennel inside the house in the living room with the family. Both doth are L.E. The 10 yr old is retired..
