Hi Robert, in your fear aggression video you tell your client not to do anything and drop the leash if the dog bites you. Fortunately, the dog does not bite you so this scenario is not shown 🙂 What would you have done if the dog bit you? Trying to help a friend with a very fearful dog, so planning for this scenario 🙂

Hey Robert! My area has an epidemic of off leash dogs. I take my Mal to a field behind my apt. for fetch with a Chuck it stick every morning and obedience mixed in to tire him out since he’ll be in the crate ~4 hrs while I’m at work. Lately we constantly have dogs run up to us and ruining his training. He’s fine with them at a distance but as soon as they run up to him there’s no recalling him and he engages. It’s so frustrating. How can I get him to recall if he’s in too high drive for e collar?

At what age is it recommended to start training?

Hey Robert – My Max/GSD is now 18 months and doing very well. He is conditioned to the e-collar and is great when we do long-leash training. I want him to experience being off-leash and enjoying hikes and parks but am not convinced he will listen to me. I feel like he can tell the difference between a long even 50 foot leash and no leash at all. How do I know when he is ready to be off-leash? I know that is a difficult question but looking for guidance. Is it just something I need to experiment?

Hello, I have an eleven month old Euro Doberman. He is quite tall and is taller than the kitchen table. He is also able to walk to the kitchen counter and be able to smell and see items on the counter. He likes to take clean napkins and items off the table and shred them. I also cannot train him to stay out of the kitchen altogether because his feeding and watering dish are in conjunction of the room. How do I train him to “leave it” when I am NOT there (he mostly listens when I’m there). TY

When performing a leash correction, what is the correct amount of pressure to apply?

We have over 2 years old rhodesian ridgeback, he always is a playful dog and very friendly but always showed a fear if other dogs starts being aggressive or even bark, it seams like this is now growing when he is scared of every dog regardless of size ( even the smallest ) once other dog starts to bark he hide his tail and either curl or runs away. Please let me know how can we change his behaviour and build up his confidence

Hello Robert & Janet, Thank you for your passion, commitment, & patience each week as you answer all our questions! I’m thinking about recruiting help from local neighbors/dog walkers to train my very reactive & protective 2 yr old ACD. Would it be best to hold these sessions in my own front yard, which would limit us to a 10’ line or in a nearby park which would be neutral for the dogs?

Nathalie

What is the better equipment to train a Malinois to walk on leash without pulling or wanting to run for cars or everything who’s rolling (car, bicycle, truck, skateboard…). In Quebec (Canada), all dogs over 20 pounds have to wear a harness or a gentle leader…but it’s not working with my Daisy. I heard you in the video with an agressive Malinois (Roxy), that harnesses are not good. Thanks for your time!

Hi Robert, Should I be kenneling our dog when we have small children over? Our lab mix was kenneled for 8+ hrs a day in her previous home. We have been working on resetting her mindset about the kennel. She is sleeping in it at night with no problem, and is put up when we leave. (Max 2-3hr). But doesn’t choose the kennel herself. I nanny and have two small children over 3-5 times a week for around 6 hours. Merkava has been AMAZING around them, but I can tell it sometimes is a bit much for her. ~L

Hi Robert, I have an intact 16 month old male GSD.

He is obedient and well behaved mostly, (thanks to you).

I have an issue though, he has started growling and standing over other intact male dogs, even those he’s played with nicely all his life, and other small dogs who, I think, are no threat to him. Avoiding all dogs is near to impossible on our leash walks as many tight spaces to negotiate here in England. Can I train this behaviour out of him or is this hormonal, meaning I can’t?

Hello Robert. My 6-month male Mali is with the help of a professional, being trained to be dog and people neutral. How would you approach his interaction with friends and family when they stay on the farm for the weekend? This entails excitable city children who are enjoying space to ride their bikes, run and scream. He is still very much in the initial training phase.

In your 10-26-21 Members Only Live, you endorsed the use of e-collar rattle-snake-avoidance training for blocking cat-aggressive/reactive behavior with both Marcel Lteif in Dubai and Eric Martinson (with his malinois Quincy that had chased and intended to kill a cat out in his front yard). But then you did not recommend the same use for blocking dog-reactive behavior in answering AMA questions earlier. Please shed some light on that.
