An elderly female boxer died recently. The younger, male Doberman in the home is now acting as if it’s depressed. Owner is giving Doberman extra attention. Will the extra attention reinforce the depressed behavior? What does the dog need from its owner? Thank you.

This might be a self-interested question, but I notice my dutchie is overtly affectionate with guests at the house, more-so with me. I do feel a little jealous just because I work so hard to nurture our relationship but it doesn’t matter when people are over, if I have treats/toys, she will still seek them out to ask them for pets (something she rarely does with me), although she is “bonded” to me. We recently got a BH together. Is this just a personality thing? Am I overthinking? I don’t want to deprive guests of interacting with her but admittedly I do get frustrated when she chooses them.

At what age do you think is appropriate to start using an e-collar?

2 yr intact Mal, who I do mondio with. 1 issue is whining when dogs come near him. Was careful with his socialization and worked on neutrality. Don’t let him play with other dogs (only my other dog). With toys or being under command he can ignore but without toys/ doing obedience he whines & if a dog comes to him immediately postures and gets intense (no barking or lunging just an intense energy). Can recall instantly but Id like him to learn to be able to relax around other dogs. Loses interest of dogs quickly after initial few seconds whining if they’re calm. Am I making a problem of this?

Hi robert- I own a 12 wk old female English mastiff. Didn’t know of you at the time of my adoption, everything on the internet says they’re gentle giants and in particular they are low energy as adults, and I have a knee injury that prevents me from running with retrievers and shepards, so I thought it was a good fit for my life. With your recent podcast I’m wondering if I made a mistake. I am dedicated to training her and so far she’s doing OK with recall, but loves to gnaw on people’s feet. Is there any english mastiff specific training tips you can give me?

Hi, saw in few of your videos that you use cheese sticks? for treats, can you tell me which one you’re using and where I can get it from?

Thank you.

Hi Robert, My 20 month mali can go on walks in crowded cities brush past people and he either ignores or looks and keeps walking. can stop have a chat with someone at 5-6 feet. But if they intentionally walk closer to us, growling and barking commence. Friend in our yard , Bear went up to her offered rear for her to stroke. A few weeks later in a park saw her and her friend’s she naturally said “Hey Bear” and went to stroke him after experience with Bear at our home. And to all our surprise he snapped at her. People make mistakes but I don’t want Bears 1st response to Growl, Bark or Bite

Hello Robert, Our Malinois, two years old, is very reactive towards cars, bicycles, other dogs and has a high prey-drive. We cannot let him off leash, as there are rabbits, hares, deer, all around. Almost all trainers recommend a long leash to give the dog a greater sense of freedom. But if he suddenly sniffs a wildlife trail, or sees a cat or another dog, he’s off! With a long leash that gives him plenty of time to gather speed and will absolutely knock us down. Cats and hares crouch down, so I cannot foresee his lunge, he will already have smelled the animal! long leash or not? Thanks!

My 3yr Pyr/Shep mix was attacked on a walk by 3 off-leash dogs in our neighborhood when she was 1.5yrs old. Since then, we have made huge improvements on walks, her obedience is very good, remains neutral to dogs on trails/off-leash areas, etc. She still struggles in a specific scenario: insecurity when a “new” dog enters when she’s on leash (ex: dog friendly establishment). She is fine with dogs already there, but if a new dog enters she starts to build, and is VERY reactive if a dog enters from behind her view and is “surprised”. I try to anticipate, but not always possible.

Hello Robert, it wouldn’t let me use the section for the biting video, iv tried watching YouTube videos and looking on line, I feel I’ve tried everything, my 4 month old English bull, Zeus, just wants to bite all the time, I know they need to bite to learn, but there is no change in the strength of his bite, please any thoughts would help.

Hi Robert, My 15 month old male Lab, is turning quite aggressive in his behavior towards some dogs big or small.. He is totally friendly with humans but lunges and growls and barks at other dogs. I don’t know what sets him off on a particular dog. He is very calm and playful to our neighbors male and female Shih Tzus. Also to a young female Chow chow Lab mix. But just this afternoon, my wife took him outside to pee/poo etc. and he was very aggressive to a male beagle (a well behaved dog). He tried to lunge towards the other dog (teeth bared and drooling).

What is your advice on this matter?

Brian

I’ve been using the Koehler method with my 2 year old Doberman over the last few months with a lot of success. However, she still tends to heel a little too far in front of me despite the leash being loose. She tends to keep me in her peripheral vision and is able to adjust to changes in direction or pace but goes right back in front of me. Low distraction areas are better than high distraction areas. I’m looking for other techniques or suggestions that may help. Her toy drive keeps her attention on me but is too high for heeling work. Treats help until I’m out of treats.

Hi Robert, is there anything more I can do with my now 6 mos. old GSD puppy to get her to walk better on the leash when walking in our neighborhood? I’ve been walking her 2 times a day for four months now and most times it is just brutal. She is very suspicious of most things especially other dogs and large trucks. She stops often to look at whatever it is and to sniff as well. I’m constantly pulling to get her moving. And when we walk with her older brother who is 8 yr. old she doesn’t do any of those behaviors but instead just pulls with all of her might trying to get him and jump on him.
