Hi Robert, I have a 5-year-old female Malinois and we train agility. She works very well, but I struggle with reinforcement. She isn’t food-motivated, and toys or balls make her overly excited. When I use a toy, she starts offering every behavior she knows very fast—tunnel, jumps, contacts, sit, down—guessing instead of focusing. When I teach something new, I need a reward that keeps her engaged but allows more focus and control, not full over-arousal.

I have been training her since she was very young and now when we walk she is reactive to some dogs and people. She’s great in training play groups with other dogs and loves them so I’m figuring it’s her age. She’s great in dog play groups and loves other dogs but lately she’s been barking and lunging at certain dogs and people.

English cocker spaniel. We knew they were prone to resource guarding so we worked on it early on. He doesn’t resource guard food or toys, will drop raw bone into our hand if we ask but we recently found out he resource guards things he’s not supposed to have like plastic or a Christmas ornament and it’s very dependent on what it is. Our problem is he doesn’t do it with me or my wife, only other people. Our trainer said to e collar train him for this but I know you say not to do that. We need to figure this out because now I don’t trust anyone to look after him if we ever leave.

Hi again. Thank you for taking up my question about an e-collar recommendation. I found the link you posted for the collar, but unfortunately it just links back to the member questions video. Can you please fix the link? Your video response was unclear because it referred to the “Delta Sport,” which has been discontinued. Garmin does make “Delta SE” and a “Sport Pro” I am assuming you meant to link to one of those? If so, which one? A working link would be helpful to me and probably other members. Your e-collar videos are very useful otherwise. Thank you for doing them.

Hello, hope you and yours are doing well. Findus is now 8.5 months old and so much is going on mentally. A more serious side of him is coming forward. When creatures from the forest are lurking around he does turn into a beast. When all is calm he shows a very sweet side, he is giving ear washes to the 3 malinois and it almost looks like he is taking care of them. This balance between power, love and when to use what makes for a super interesting dog. I do have a detailed plan but how would you continue to develop his instinct in the correct direction.

Hi Robert! I’m back with another question regarding my almost 4mo WLGSD. I’ve been socializing her by taking her to Home Depot, hobby Lobby, home goods, restaurants, and neighborhood walks. She’s been doing great but in the past week she’s gone to two restaurants with outdoor patios and she’s barked at other dogs and jumps toward them. She’s never barked at other dogs! I just want to know the best way to handle it. She has an issue with our cats which I’m still working on but before now she’s been fine with other dogs around when we’re out. I want to handle it the right way. Thanks!!

I have a 7 year old border collie. He was my son’s dog but since he has had children it is not a fair environment for him. He struggles with impulse control. I used to think that he needed more exercise, more running more ball.. to wear him out. Not so much the case. Playing ball with Ranger makes his impulse behavior worse. We train daily. It’s been a SLOW process. One step at a time. We do search games, a lot of pattern work. I had a trainer fry him with an Ecollar so he’s terrified of that. I don’t use it because I don’t know how to fix it. It’s hard to explain.

18m old GSD. Reactivity began at 7-8m after dysplasia surgeries. If properly introduced to dogs and people, he’s as playful and friendly as possible. IF not, he has severe 10/10 reactivity to both dogs and people. I bring him to a Home Depot parking lot only and do heeling and exposure therapy and get as close to people as possible. I do this almost everyday. I have him sit and make him look at my eyes while people walk by closer and closer. I have strangers toss him a treat if he doesn’t bark when they walk by. I see some progress but randomly, he will react. Am I handling it the right way?
