I got a 15 wks old GSD who’s of course mouthing, I reviewed your videos on puppy mouthing over & over however i still need help considering my puppy’s bites are very tough always drawing blood & I can not pull away from him since it’s painful & i also don’t want to correct him using his crate since that’s his safe place, is this still considered normal puppy mouthing? & if he doesn’t grow out of it what do I do? & what should i do now? Also, how can I prepare myself for when he gets into puberty?

Hello Robert, I just bought an e-collar and there are 3 functionalities which are “beep”, “vibration”, and the “electric shock” I just want to understand if there are uses for each functionality? like if I do a correction I just use the vibration mode. I tried testing the shock mode on my arm and it stings me and feels uncomfortable even at number 1 level.

Simon

Hi,What do you think about bark collars. I found one that raises the level of shock if he continues to bark and when he is quiet it stops, for every 15 seconds passed without barking it lowers the level of shock until 0. I personally think it’s great tool for people dealing with dogs that overreact and bark for almost no reason. Is it true that the collar can actually make dog more calm and less stressed without barking? Thank you, God bless you.

Hey Robert – is it ok to teach a focused heel using food. I know you normally use toys in your videos but my 14 month Mal/GSD is extremely good motivated. Way more food motivated than toys. I can get his drive up using toys but it eventually subsides. Food is his main motivation.

Hi Robert, thank you for all your great advice. It has really helped our training. We have a 2 yr old GSD who whines and will cry on walks with the family. This only happens when one or more family members goes ahead of her. The farther they get from her the louder she will cry. Half of the time she will pull to try to get to whoever is ahead and cry, the other half she’ll keep a loose leash while crying. Is this anxiety? How do we help her be comfortable with someone being ahead of the group?

I want to teach my GSD (6mth) not to approach other dogs up until I say he can. But I do have a challenge figuring out how to do this. I do not allow on-leash greetings (using leave it – and it works, usually ;p), but I do struggle when off leash. He is off leash only in safe environment with safe dogs and his recall is not 100% but quite good in comparison to other dogs. I say leave it / or sit and ok (if he can approach). Could you please advise what else should or could I do to help him learn?

Good day Robert, I’m working in Zambia and we don’t have any trainers here that can assist me, I trained my dog on your videos, but have one problem, she’s over friendly, whenever she sees other dogs she will start whining and going crazy, she just wants to play, I have tried with food, and balls to get her attention, but when there’s other dogs, there is no me, no matter what I try, do you perhaps have any advice? Will this change with age? Is it possible that I have ‘over” socialized her?

Hello Robert, today my wife was walking our 7 month old boxer and a husky managed to get loose from its house and charged them. The husky chased my dog in circles and eventually nipped him in the side and then went away. No physical damage present on my dog. I have been very strict in getting my dog to dial into me around other dogs so he can be neutral and am afraid this will be a setback. What do you advise?

I hope you’re doing well! My 2 year old GSD has shown an aptitude for SAR / tracking. We’ve been invited to work with a local K9 officer to train for SAR work to assist county teams when needed. My dog is VERY ball / toy driven, and he does find various items easily with his nose while playing games with him. The idea of helping others with my dog is awesome. Is there any reason not to pursue SAR work with my dog in terms of his own well-being / enjoyment of dog life? Thanks for your input

Hey Robert, first of all thank you so much for all of your help, showed my 7 month girl GSD off today at a competition and she just blew everyone away. She now understands the hold with a dumbbell but she just doesn’t seem to learn how to pick it up off the ground. She just keeps trying to bite the sides of it not getting the middle. I have tried putting it into different positions with no luck. Shall I just keep waiting for her to figure it out? Anything I can do? Thanks again.

What are your thoughts on rough play with a 7 month old puppy? Sometimes I like to play rough with my golden where I have my hands all over him and have him play biting. He only play bites the hands and always softly . He sneezes during – which I’ve read is a sign of play. I can make him stop right away on command and always make sure that I am the only one that initiates the rough play. Is this type of play OK or am I building bad future habits? Also, he’s still a little mouthy in general.

Hi Robert, in your Introduction to my methods, you said we need to reward the dog whenever heshe performs a task perfectly…I’m wondering when someone does IPO, SCHUTZHUND, how will heshe reward the dog with treat or any competitive obedience…like I saw you demonstrating obedience & protection, you didn’t reward Goofy with treats or something…I’m confused… Can you explain?

We have a 1 year old German Shepard/Belgian Malinois, female (Allie). A month ago, we added a male, German Shepard & named him (Echo). I’ve noticed the last few times during their play time, it looks as though he’s trying to hump her. She just continues running, playing, having no idea he’s trying to hump her. She’s fixed, he will be getting neutered but not for awhile. Should I be worried that he could get more frustrated. I don’t want play time to become aggressive or am I overthinking it?

Hi, I have a 7 month old male German shepherd, not neutered and he is reactive. My problem is when we are fenced on both sides of our yard. There’s a sweet Golden on the left and a black male lab on the right not neutered and a smaller dog. If the Golden comes to greet at the fence, my dog will AGGRESSIVELY bark. He only barks but it’s like he wants to attack. He has been over to her yard to play. When I’m outside I use the heel to get close and sit then repeat. How do I fix him without the leash?

Hi Robert. Thanks for your time on this. Been with you a few months and based in the U.K. so ecollars and prongs are very looked down upon. We’ve tried out best with positive but ordered an ecollar as positive simply doesn’t cut it with reactions to dogs and people – he’s not aggressive just very playful. Is there a risk the ecollar used to curb genuine excitement will cause long term problems? What’s the best route for this please?

Hey Robert, I was watching one of your puppy Q&A on Youtube and you said that your dogs learnt bite inhibition at an early age. At what age was it for Goofy and Duane and what is your personal strategy for teaching bite inhibition? Please share it. I am trying so hard to listen to your advice to be calm when puppy gets mouthy and I have gone from getting bleeding cuts to scratches or bruises, so my blood stays in mostly now. It sounds funny to ask but would you call it progress?

My 7 month old groenendaeler pulls hard on the leash while walking. From the moment we had him at 8 weeks we have used a long line for his training and walks, using your video’s as a guideline but I fear we have made some mistakes in the process. We struggle to get, and especially keep, his attention on us. He is a high drive dog and we live in a city with lots of distractions. Changing directions while walking hypes him up until he starts humping my leg, not the type of attention I look for…

Hi Robert- Thanks for all your advice over the past year. I struggled with the puppy I got and kept remembering what you said- “you got the dog you got.” There is a reason I got my nervy saluki shepherd and we are making some incredible gains and having fun now! Question- He’s never been food oriented and now that I work out of the home- I have to convince both of them to get out of bed to have breakfast. Am I feeding too much? They are perfect weight.

My 4 year old AmStaff pit has shown extreme aggression towards small children and cats. He’s absolutely fine with older kids and adults. My cure is to simply keep him away from kids and cats. Can he be trained to accept them or am I just being overly cautious when some training would do? He listens to me extremely well and is always complimented on his good behavior at the vets and when he’s boarded. Can I help him?Outstanding Malinois aggression video you did recently! Thank you for making it.

Tristan

Hey Robert, I noticed my mal’s aggression early, when he was only 12 weeks old he would put holes in my hand if I tried to take things out of his mouth. My question is now that he’s older how to respond when he bites? Today (11 m/o) I picked up his chin to kiss him on the head before work and he nailed my thumb and ran. Should I leave him on leash indoors and leash pop? In the past I’ve gotten confrontational about it with him but I’m wondering in your eyes what’s the appropriate response?

Maxwell

Hey Robert – I have been using the herm sprenger prong collar on my 14 month old Malinois/GSD but recently started condition him on the e collar. He has been responding really well to the e collar and think it may not be necessary to use the prong. What kind of collar would you recommend we use for him? Again he is a mal/gsd who is about 75 pounds. Thanks!
