This course is a culmination of over 12 years of my work in animal shelters training staff, volunteers and management in the skills it takes to save shelter dogs. Learning the skills to work with these dogs is paramount in saving their lives. Shelter dogs are different from “pet dogs,” I explain that in one of the lectures you’ll see. The main difference is that these dogs don’t have the bond to a person that a pet dog has, and that can make a huge difference in the way they respond to life. We don’t know anything about these dogs when we start working with them. Do they have a bite history? How are they with other animals? Do they like to train… to be touched… etc? We learn that as we go.

This course more than met my expectations which is saying something because my expectations were high. I do not easily part with that kind of money. I appreciated the course guarantee but realized immediately upon starting that it was well worth every cent. I will be returning to the course regularly.
Every lecture is well supported with video. The tests kept me on track. Lessons are not only ‘how to’ but also ‘why’.
One suggestion would be to print a summary of each question on the video or make it possible to hear the questions. That said, this is minor.

If you work or volunteer in a shelter… If you own a rescue dog who has issues… If you are a dog trainer (professional or not)… This course is for you! Robert’s method of training is based on clear communication with the dog, including mostly praise and encouragement but not shying away from gentle corrections to let the dog know when its behavior is not appropriate or desired. Fairness to the dog is at the forefront of everything he does, however, so corrections are only used once the dog understands what he is being asked to do (with the exception of certain behavioral issues such as aggression). When I first started the course, I was a bit disappointed that some of the sessions were very short and did not go into the depth I expected. As I progressed through it, however, I discovered that Robert returns to key topics (such as canine body language) over and over again. This style of organization gave me information in manageable bits, and with each repetition (and expansion) of a topic, I built a better and better picture. This was also combined with alternating lectures and actual training sessions with real shelter dogs and volunteers. It ended up being much more effective for my overall grasp of the concepts than if each topic had been covered in only one long video. Watching the volunteers sometimes struggle to perform skills that they were just starting to learn showed me how to address my own struggles. Robert is an amazing trainer whose depth of understanding of dog psychology and behavior I can only hope to one day attain. This course is a great start toward that goal!

I just finished the Shelter Dog program and was thrilled with the amount of valuable video content and information. As a trainer and dog owner, there was certainly a good percentage of the techniques that I already use in my own training, but the clarity of explanation and rationale will still be incredibly valuable in how I communicate those techniques to clients. I also work in rescue. Because it is a foster-based rescue, I am not involved in playgroups, but the ability to watch dog introductions and the body language of the dogs involved was invaluable. I particularly loved watching students work through the techniques with untrained dogs. Much of the online content available in other programs is demonstrations by professional trainers with already trained dogs which skips over a great deal of the initial phases of learning that are so incredibly important to see. Robert’s simple and straightforward techniques are explained in significant depth and then you are able to watch students work through the subtleties that make those techniques effective.
