Greetings Robert! I have a 1 yo Mal and she’s a very friendly dog. Been doing obedience training with her since she was 2 months old and she doesn’t react to other dogs or people and actually ignores them. I do most of my training with her off leash in a public park. Recently she started reacting to bikes and scooters, starts running after them and scares people off, she hasn’t bit anyone but I’m afraid she might do in the future.

I have a almost 2 year old Malinois. He has fear aggression and very protective around us. He was socialized at a young age with a dog company called so fetch. They trained him with e collar and twice a week Fe goes on adventure days. He is very good with us and good with the handlers at do fetch and the vet (but we are not in the equation). I am trying to walk him more and reduce sending him on ‘adventure days’ with so fetch who pick him up and drop him. He goes on hikes in car with dogs.

After training my 11-mo old working-line GSD with you for the past few months, she is now leash reactive only when another dog barks at her, otherwise she walks past “on alert” but without incident. When in this situation and another dog barks at her aggressively, should I correct her counter-bark reaction or am I doing more harm than good? It does not seem fair to her to be correcting her so hard in these situations but otherwise it sets off a chain-reaction between the two dogs.

Naimbag nga aldaw Robert & Janet. This is my 6mo old mal. In the video, I was training her the STAY command, when a customer suddenly appeared in front of her while I was out of sight, she semi charged and barked. I called her off, led her back to STAY position, and rewarded while the customer was near her. The previous guy in red shorts is acquainted with her, so no reaction. Did I do it right? She does have some people aggression. Dios ti ag ngina.

Greetings from Sydney, Australia ! My two year old female Doberman ( Sabre ) has a very strange reaction every time we come across a female Husky on our daily walks. Both dogs are on a leash however Sabre becomes very submissive, dropping into a down position. I remain neutral and continue to try and walk with her but she anchors herself until the husky has gone away. Sabre is otherwise a confident and happy girl. What could it be to trigger this unusual response ?

I wrote to you several months ago about a tight front and asking for alternative to throwing treats between legs. When you suggested getting a dachshund I laughed so hard….my first dog was a dachshund! Well..Blu is an emergency rehome..weighs 105 pounds and stands 29” at the withers and I’m only 5’ and outweigh him by only 20 pounds. He had no boundaries or training. I’ve used your training techniques with him… some a little modified…with great success…just saying thank you.

Good morning Janet & Robert, There are recirculating fountains in the yard, mini-mal is sometimes tempted to drink from them. What can I put in the water to make it unattractive? On a separate note, will be ordering the shelter dog course. Not a trainer, but very committed to well being of my 2yr old Mini-Mal (85% Mal, 15% ACD), will I think only help give her the best possible. PS Thank you Janet for your occasional inputs, always helpful, always pertinent when offered. What a team!

Hi Robert , I came here from youtube. I love your videos and find them very helpful. My 3 months-old malinois puppy has learnt a lot with your help. Our only problem is she is very afraid of everything. She usually ignores people on the street, she sits next to them or she walks pass by them. However , if anyone turns to her and look at her or even worse say something to her , she starts barkin and she tries to bite them. I have no idea what to do about this. Could you suggest a video for me?

Hi Robert, thanks for all your previews advice and video’s, they´ve helpen tremendously. I´m not sure what to do now though. Our pup went from being terrified of strange dogs, to walking past them without issue (we worked a lot on his socialisation from a distance) to now trying to pull to every dog that he sees to both greet them and invite them to play. I´m worried that if I react to negatively to this, he´ll go back to being scared of dogs. Any advice? Thanks again!Ps 7 month rottie-mall mix

I am strugling with low activity of my dog. Zen is loosing interest in playing with me after few minutes, he likes to sit or lie down and look around. I have balls, tug toy, frisbee, treats…if he chase it,he does it only “3 times”. He does not run much by himself and not showing happines or positive excitement. Zen seem like a melancholic dog. Could you please talk about how to work with a low drive melancholic Mal? Can it be my fail that he is not active or is it more his genetics?

Starting work with a trainer to intro my 8mo old Mal to ecollar. Since 8wks old, I’m the only one walking and training him. My gf has been feeding him and sometimes playing with him at home, but does not have his respect. I want him to listen to her and the trainer intends to use ecollar to make him obey her. My concern: is it fair or even possible to force this sort of respect using an ecollar without negative side effects? Would really appreciate your advice on how to handle this fairly.

I have a female GSD that is a failed foster. She was a COVID puppy and had severe fear aggression. I’ve really focused on the obedience training and she has made such significant improvement. I need your advice on one particular situation. If I’m sitting down and she’s next to me (like on a bench) and someone walks directly toward us it can still set her off. Movement has been my friend up to this point. How we can practice getting her comfortable with people approaching us? She will be 2.

Hey Robert – My 2 1/2 year old GSD/Mal recently has started becoming a scavenger. He is constantly trying to get into the garbage and jumping on the kitchen counters and dinner table. He’ll stop when I yell no at him but he doesnt seem to care. He is great on walks and his behavior has improved so much since he was a puppy but this is getting very annoying. Any advice? I know i should correct him but im just not sure how to get the timing correct because it happens so quick. Thanks!

Hi Robert and Janet,
I have a bordoodle, he’s almost 2. I’ve always struggled with the “out” command. He will “out” when playing ball. He will out when he’s not excited. What the concern is, is that he won’t out in an emergency and when he’s hyped up. Your thoughts on how to improve this. By the way, he never growls, but he won’t open his jaw. I try not to pull. Do I wait him out? How do I improve this?
Thank you
Kelli
In Siggy’s puppy class #2 you are teaching Siggy to touch the platform. Is this the start of ‘Place’ or something else. I’ve watched the video a few times and haven’t figured out what that ‘Touch’ command is used for. Thanks

Brand new member: Do you have a dog body language for dummies video? How do I tell the difference between desensitizing looking vs aggressive/dominant stares? I seem to keep making the mistake of closing distance with a trigger before my dog is ready. Thanks!

How do you find a balance between letting a puppy be a puppy and trying to advance the dog in training quickly? I am afraid of trying to push the dog forward too fast and set unrealistic and unfair expectations on it and ultimately stripping the dog of being able to be a puppy. This is for a well bred malinois. Thank you.
