German Shepherd Training - Intro

The German Shepherd is a breed associated with protection and obedience. Although most people think of German Shepherd Training as a very old breed, it actually originated in Germany around 1899. Know in Germany as Deutscher Schäfer Hund (DSH) and originally known in England as Alsatian.

They were bred as and are classified as herders. Herding breeds are bred to move large groups of animals, in the case of the German Shepherd, it was bred to herd sheep. However the GSD has evolved as a notable breed for their ability in many types of service including SAR (search and rescue), disability assistance (seeing eye dogs, mobility assistance and more), military work, protection work, detection work.

The GSD is one of the most popular breeds in the US / AKC and the UK / UKC. Their ability in protection dog sports, obedience and other sports makes them a super fun companion.

What I love about training a German Shepherd

I would have to say that German Shepherds are one of my all-time favorite dogs to own and train. They are incredibly smart, loyal and biddable. Yet it’s important to remember they can be stubborn and strong willed.

Training a German Shepherd with online dog training takes a clear headed approach with little time for nonsense. Basically, show them what you want them to do, help them learn how to do it and then stand back. They are a no-nonsense breed.

There are a variety of “types” of German Shepherds, namely working lines and show lines, yet even further split up between American show lines and German show lines / Sieger dogs.

I am not a great fan of the show line dogs because I think, in my opinion, that these breeding’s have strayed from the original intent. The dogs are too big and bulky. I prefer more medium sized GSDs along the working lines.

German Shepherds are some of the most amazing dogs in their dedication to their owners and love the structure of training and live for interaction with their people.

Personality types who will love a German Shepherd

German Shepherds will do well with balanced, clear headed, focused people who know what they want and are clear about their communication. Basically, know what you want, make it clear and expect nothing less. Active people are best owners for a shepherd because they love to be active. Sitting around an apartment is good for them if they’ve had exercise and training, but they need a job.
