Hand Feeding

My Malinois would eat a meal in less time to fill her water can. That’s not a good thing. Then I saw a training video here that Robert is feeding by hand and making his dog work for it a little, nothing crazy just some simple repetitions. So I started doing the same thing just to slow Layla down.

She had some dental work done last week and we needed to shut down the training a little bit until she was healed up a bit and I was softening up her kibble with a little warm water. To slow here down I’d have to take her bowl away, have her sit or down or spin and once eye contact was made she get more to eat. Simple.

Yesterday, Wednesday, I started her on a Clicker to distract mostly and refocus her as she is way over threshold at times with other dogs. Load up the clicker and be on our merry way for a session. Before we get triggered I would let her get to the end of her 4′ lead feel it tighten, call her to come and as she is turning to me I’d click, now she knows what happens next, reward! But to call her off the distraction she is checked out and begins to escalate and a leash pop is necessary and I shorten it up, pull her in and say “blah, blah, blah” because that is all she hears anyway, (I’m actually saying “we don’t play that”) in a nice tone and I apply pressure on her by blocking her some as I encroach in on her while giving her that command. She is able to shut it down quickly now whereas a few weeks ago I had a missal at the end of the lead. But we are getting better for sure.

After and episode, it’s back to the training and reward. It’s fun when you start seeing progress and if it weren’t for Roberts Training advice we’d still be fighting one another.🙂
