chewing on sticks and such

    Hi,

One of my gsd pups (now 13 weeks) is showing a clear preference to chew/gnaw on hard surfaces over flexible ones; the harder the better it seems. In practice, that means she is trying to get her teeth on stuff like the bar of the kennel, the corner of a pallet, the legs of a chair and even a brick if available. The average rubbery chewing toys just don’t cut it for her it seems.

In store I have bought a coffeewood stick for dogs, and it seems she likes it. But jeesh… they cost quite the amount for a piece of treeroot! So I was wondering, are there perhaps certain types of tree-stick that I can get from a tree myself (we have quite some on the terrain) that are also suitable? I understand that some trees can be harmful, either for their toxicity to dogs, or because they splinter. But are there perhaps tree sticks I can harvest myself that are OK? Perhaps willow, or birch, or?

    Thanks in advance,
    Eke

I would stay away from sticks. Try knee bones. I let mine chew them all the way down. Also I like nylabones. The huge harder ones, I think they call them for severe chewers or something (Robert does not like them). Anyway a pack of knee bones should be good. The pup still pick up anything it finds on the road/yard though. You just take it from them.
