Train the dog to stay alone

    Hello,

My Malinois is 21 months old, so I don’t know if he still fits the puppy category but my question is generally related to puppies.

We started slowly training our dog to stay alone at home by leaving the house for short times while he stayed in his crate. He was around 10 months when we started this. But then COVID and lockdowns hit and we couldn’t train the dog anymore since we were at home all day long. So now he is 21 months old and he is very attached to my husband. Even when my husband leaves for 15 minutes and I stay with the dog, he will wait for him looking through the fence and crying until my husband comes back. At first it was ok when the dog stayed with me but it slowly changed and now although he is a very good dog with every one in the family, he is just sad and depressed when my husband is not around.

We can’t obviously take him everywhere with us. For example, my family invited us for dinner but the problem is we don’t know what to do with our dog. If we leave him alone, he will be barking and crying until we come back, if he comes with us he will jump on the windows and scratch them to be close to my husband (yes, the dog doesn’t want to stay alone outside if my husband is inside the house).

We definitely made a mistake by not training the dog properly to stay alone, what can we do to make this situation better now?

Sorry for the long post, thank you for your help. 🙏🏻
