Our 6 month golden retriever puppy, Murphy, has begun counter surfing. What can we do to deter this behavior?

I have a 2 year old female GSD/Belgian Malinois (Allie) & 1 yr old male GSD (Echo). Echo was diagnosed with meningitis at 6 mo & put on lots of meds. He was unable to play, run, get up on furniture until he was about 12 mo. Now that they can play together, he’s been growing at her over toys, areas of the house such as the couch/bed or when Allie trys to lay near me. I’d be devastated if there was a dog fight & obviously want to prevent that. Does this sound like he’s resource gaurding?

There was an off-leash dog 200 yds away with an owner who wasn’t paying attention. I tried to leave but the dog came across the street running toward us at full speed. My 2 yo GSD got scared and took flight. She is e-collar trained and her recall was good until today. She ignored the stim, ran across the street and went to my car. I was yelling at the owner for 5 min to call his dog chasing after my dog, but he didn’t notice. Nobody got hurt but I feel so bad. What should I have done?

We adopted Jacobi 3 weeks ago. He was listed as a German shepherd 6 months old but turned out to be a BM. We didn’t even know what BM was until our friend saw his picture and told us that he is not a German shepherd but BM.

We didn’t want to take him back to the shelter and we are trying very hard to do right by him. Pa

Hi Robert. My partner and I foster shelter dogs, who live with us until they are adopted. Rex is our 5th foster (1.5 Year mixed breed) who joined us about a week ago. We started crate training him when he came home and he is doing well and enjoys his crate. The shelter has told us that they do not recommend crate training as it can pose problems in his adjustment when he is adopted. (Most owners in South Africa are not accustomed to crate training)

We have a 9.5 month old intact male Toller. Until two days ago he was, for the most part, a good pup. The last few days he’s been incorrigible. He won’t listen to commands, acting erratic and has no focus. Starting to lift his leg to pee and humping us, which makes us think it’s a hormonal/adolescence problem. Or, do you think it could be something else? Any suggestions on how to work with him now that he’s acting so differently? Any changes to his routine, training, or corrections needed?

I have a male 13 week old Mal GSD mix. What type of mental stimulation do you suggest for him? We train 3 to 5 minutes, two to three times a day. We play fetch, he has toys to play with inside and my 10.5 year old GSD mix female to play with as well. He still seems to be bored. He chases his tail on occasions and will stare up at our ceiling fan grumbling at it. I think he needs more mental stimulation but not sure what else to give him besides more training. Thank you for your time!

I have 5yo mom & 3yo pup female goldendoodles They were fine until the pup turned 2 – mom began having some trigger anxiety/fear aggression to pup. We are scheduled with walk/work/play times. Daily we work on all commands -Thanks to your videos We use cots/kennels- we give them 5 min yard playtimes, say down or place & they listen – but randomly-usually in house the trigger aggression fight occurs w/side eye from mom. I’m not quick enough to stop. Happens randomly. Vet visit OK. need help!

I conditioned my Vizsla with a Mini Educator using low levels(2/3).While practicing recall with distance/low distraction,I used slightly higher level(4/5).While off leash hiking,I recall him if a person/dog is approaching. For stronger distraction,I have had to turn it up to 10/15(only used on non-compliance).I don’t want to squash him, but also need to get him back quickly and not have to fiddle with too many levels. What is your opinion with the levels on a mini educator/my approach?

When starting the puppy lessons, Lesson One states as Day 1. Then Lesson 2 states as Day 2, etc… When starting the Lesson 1, should this be worked on for a certain amount of time before moving onto Lesson 2, etc? I am wanting to keep my puppy on a learning schedule and do not want to push her, but to assure she is working to her best ability to keep going forward on a correct timeframe for her.

Hello! We’ve had 2 dogs that went deaf as they aged (14 & 17 y/o). With the 1st, we unconsciously taught hand signals for basic commands, e.g. stay & come. We found that so useful with the 1st dog, we trained the 2nd, and are now trying to train our puppy with hand signals.

Are hand signals important for you? I have been watching puppy series lessons and haven’t noticed hand signals being used. Do you teach them later on, or are hand signals not a priority? Maybe I missed them in the lessons.

? 8 mo old female Great Pyrenees/GSD mix. Does not have a lot of prey drive, nor food drive Training coming along with the help of videos, repetitions and patience. She is not dominant & is very sensitive/soft. She comes, sits, stands, downs, stays, leaves it well. She does not leash well but pulls constantly with martingale. Would e-collar be better than constant pulling with sharp corrections that don’t work? Does the garmin delta sport work without the Chameleon extender? Cost is an issue.

It seems there are 2 schools of thought with puppy mouthing: 1) tolerate it and not offer much for correction because it will resolve with age and 2) address any and all mouthing with a correction or a “yelp” to show that mouthing is not acceptable. I have been very tolerant of my 13 wk old mal with her mouthing and fully expected a mouthy puppy and am more curious about your thoughts on these two approaches and when I should start working with her to extinguish this as she develops. Thank you

Hi Robert, thanks for your advice on my Lab-German Shepard mix. I built her an agility training track in the backyard so she can have a job and stop destroying the house. My next question is that she’s almost 8 months old now and still play biting. I followed your advice and never stopped her biting but will it ever stop? She started to escalate to arm mouthing and nipping my torso while playing. She only plays catch with me so when she brings the ball back just to bite my hands. Thanks.

We have a 10 week old male Shep x Mal puppy that has been with us for a week. We are noticing that he, when ever out, he needs to be chewing and while chewing he has the tendency to hump. We are trying to correct and redirect the chew but it seems obsessive and I am wondering if it is some sort of dominant behavior that we should be worried about. When he gets over excited with it we are able to get him in his crate or area and he calms down and while in the crate he doesn’t chew much but as soon as we take him out it starts again.

Large 2 yr old pit bull, neutered, shelter environment. Puppy behavior-jumping, biting leash for tug, mouthing hands, super excited when out of kennel. Have seen zero people aggression. Once out in play yard and after a little energy burnt off, very trainable. Wants to “play”. Will chase thrown objects. Should I not do this as it excites “prey drive” and continue with just basic obedience commands to keep his mind calm? Goes from fairly calm to super excited in an instant – not aggressive thus far, just wants to “play”.

All of sudden my 9 month old Malinois started barking and acting very aggressive toward cars while we are driving. Did not matter if the windows were open or closed. I had to get a seatbelt for the backseat to keep him from killing us. I do not crate him anymore. Which video should I watch to help with this problem. Thank you

My daughter came over with her dog (female Akita). I have a male (fixed) Rottweiler. We had them both on leashes to let them sniff. Something sparked and they both went at each other. From my human eyes nothing happened to instigate this. Now my daughter won’t come over because of this. Any advice? Also, my dog gets along with my sons dogs no problem.

Robert – My Wife and I have had Apollo since being weaned. He just turned 4 (Malinois)  in September. He has become unpredictably aggressive towards my wife. I do not have issues, and he minds (me) well, and even for commands, it has been my wife working with Apollo on focus healing.

WHat has happened is that he will usually curl up on one end of the couch and rest his head on the loveseat. He does this with my wife as well, and we can watch TV or read, while stroking his thigh. Without warning/hackles/tensing… after about 10 minutes… it was like he was tased, and lept up snarled and bit her arm.

Hi Robert, my 1 year old english lab has develop a habit of humping. When he enters our vehicle in the front seat first and and my wife follows and sits beside him (he is in between both of us) and we go for a drive, he humps. Sometimes in training he also do this behavior. I am afraid he might knock a child or elderly person down if this habit persists. Can I do something to correct it?
