Robert – Didn’t know how to msg you directly. I live near where this incident happened & know someone who knows this family. The Mom was outside playing ball with dogs while holding the 5 month old girl. She threw the ball. Their two yr old was going after the ball & dog didn’t like that so he started attacking her. Mom was holding 5 mth old baby, but dropped it to try to break up the fight. Dog then grabbed baby & drug baby into woods where it killed baby. They had dogs for 10 yrs. There were other small instances that caused her to ask husband to get rid of dogs and he wouldn’t do it.

Hi Robert. We own a 1 year old malinois. Rex is very sociable with adults, kids and other dogs. The challenge is that when we go out for a walk and accidentally meet other dogs that he don’t know, he goes crazy. He starts barking and jumping and doesn’t listen to my order. We end up changing the direction. Is there any training / correction to do?

My 1 year old rescue American Pit Bull Terrier / Boxer / Supermutt mix has just recently started going crazy when outside and jumps around when on leash. I tried playing long and engaging games of tug, taking her on walks, giving her kongs in her crate. I’ve also given her multiple chew toys including split elk antlers. But for some reason recently she has started jumping up on me when on walks as of 2 days ago she has started biting like crazy. In the middle of tug games, she will get bored of the tug toy and start pulling on jackets and jumping around scratching with her nails and nipping

Oreo is a mixed breed 10 month old puppy who turns on me when I correct him and sometimes just out of the blue. He is very leash reactive to people and other dogs. I need help. I can’t take him anywhere without him lashing out. He goes to daycare while I work and has completed basic obedience class. I am sure that I haven’t handled this well and it’s affecting our relationship negatively. I use a prong collar when we go on walks and he does well as far as heeling but still shows aggressive behavior to people walking by and other dogs. Help me please!

Since my Standard Poodle was a puppy, I gave him, perhaps too much, freedom, such as chasing squirrels in the backyard and chasing squirrels in the woods on off-leash hikes. I would like him to have safe off-leash exercise, but I would like to stop him from chasing squirrels if asked to leave it, as well as stop him from chasing other dangerous animals, such as coyotes and beavers. He is two years old now, and this behavior has been going on for a while. Can I teach him to chase squirrels only with a release command, and can I teach him to leave other animals, and do I need an e-collar?

Good day Robert, how could I introduce a horse crop to my dog training with her wanting to tear it up? I’m trying to use for back end awareness. Thankyou in advance

I got my now 15 wk old mal when she was 9 wks. When we first started walking outside she would see strangers approaching & bark at them. Probably just low confidence in a big world. After a handful of positive interactions her behavior has changed. Now she is Ms. Super Social. I can see her start to fixate & gravitate towards the person as if to go greet them. My strategy is to turn the other direction & get her coming back to me with no verbal correction. Is this the right way to get her back focused on me without creating a boogyman complex in the dog or stopping her from being socialized?

I have shelter rescue dog, 2 yr Spayed female Pyrenees:Husky mix. When I first got her, she resource guarded food, toys. With time and training, she learned that resource guarding was not allowed and not necessary because her needs were reliably met. She hadn’t exhibited this behavior for 8 mo. She is well integrated into family and with 2 other dogs (Aussie/corgi mix). However, this week I brought home a 5 mo beagle. She acts as if pup is HERS and she resource guards, snaps at the other dogs. The 2 dogs play well with pup. I don’t let her be with pup now, not until I know how to handle. Help

Hey, you’re great! My now 4 mo Mal is just a babe and a whip. What level/attributes of suspicion would be considered normal versus nervous for a mal? Thanks!

Hi Robert, my 1 year old english lab brings me and my wife a foot mat, rag, toy, tennis ball every time we enter the front door. He has been doing this since he was about 4 months old. He doesn’t let go of the object when we try to take it. What does this behavior mean and how should we react to it correctly? Actually anyone who enters the door gets the same treatment.

R&J — Howdy! We’re training our 17 w/o Border Terrier. On a 50′ long line in an open space she does really well and is easy to recall as needed. However, on a short leash (15′ or less) on walks in the neighborhood, she tends to get to the end and pull to follow her nose or a distraction. I don’t want to be harsh, but feel I need to start teaching her to not pull. Is she too young or small at 17 weeks to start using leash ‘pops’ to correct her? We use “let’s go” to keep her moving, and “easy” to stop pulling, but these commands have variable success.

Thanks!

My 2 year old Vizsla does his ‘out’ very well when playing Tug.This transferrred to him doing an ‘out’ if he grabs something while walking .Some times he will find something (paper) that he won’t ‘out’. He does a LEAVE IT pretty well, but an issue if he gets to it before I can say LEAVE IT. Has very good recall on ecollar. Tried tapping the ecollar just as he is reaching for the paper, thinking he will back off (superstitious association),but he didn’t. He grabs it and comes back to me(because of recall training). Should I raise the level? Didn’t want to mess up his recall

I heard your broadcast about this horrific tragedy. As a parent and as a 3-year owner of a shelter Staffie/Staffie bull according to DNA, I am heartbroken for the parents and saddened for the breed stigma reinforced by these tragic incidents. This tragedy gave me more than a minute’s pause for thought about my own dog. All dog owners, regardless of breed, would do well to remember that the being on the end of their leash is an animal first with the inherent unpredictability that is in all animals. If this tragedy doesn’t jolt dog owners out of “fur baby” lala land, I dont know what will.

After my rant, I do have a question. If a pet dog owner owns a shelter dog, regardless of how long they have owned the dog, would your Shelter Dog Training program be appropriate?

LOKI is 3-year-old working GSD from the Netherlands, with Level I & II obedience from well-known working dog trainer. No issues with obedience or aggression. Does poke at Chihuahua if in my wife’s lap on occasion. Grandkids were over with our daughter and son-in-law. Daughter opened door and LOKI trots out. She grabbed his back hips and he turned and nipped at her in the air. Son-in-Law later told my daughter to spank LOKI a few minutes later. all before I was home. When telling me after, Son-in-law said he would beat LOKI because Dogs must always be submissive to people. dog in hall.*** Question got cut off
