Halo cabralians

just saw a video were you talked about pitbulls in the military.

I come from the Alaskan husky camp.

Our approach to breeding is to breed functional healthy and high performing dogs.

We don’t think of looks as important, I don’t mind if the dog is pink and runs backwards, if he’s able to perform his tasks.

Today the Alaskan husky who is a mixed breed is basically untouchable in sleddog racing,

Do you think we will see this type of approach in breeding for police/military dogs in the future?

Maybe mixing a dog for maximum performance in military use not classified as a breed.

Tika is our year old blue heeler who seems wants to heard everything all the time, esp red cars. In the car she is quite frantic, and jumps around lunging toward passing vehicles. We have started harnessing her in the car and it seems to help but still quite frantic, any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello Robert and Janet. Having scattered storms almost every day and fireworks for the last 3wks, my 3yo GSD is scared of going outside. She’s happy to go inside the car to go to the park but wouldn’t get out of the car once we get there. When it’s cloudy, it’s hard to take her even outside of the house. I don’t baby my dog when she’s scared, but she’s too big for me to physically get her to go outside. Should I just feed her when she goes outside for a walk? If she refuses to go outside, I shouldn’t feed her and try a few hours later? Please help me.

I asked aot so far about my Akita because she is a challenge so I need more help

What is best way to get a dogs attention when she is super focused on something that is not me. Most of times a dog or person. I’m practicing focus command but when she finds something more interesting than me I can’t get her attention neither with voice, touch, food, whistle, leash pressure or correction. If I tell her to sit next to leg she would sit facing oposite side towards what interest her. I want to try all that can be effective on dogs. She gets easily exited so I prefer nothing that will trigger that

Hi Robert, My 2 years old lab Grant, has made friends and arch enemies with other dogs in our neighborhood. The dogs that he grew up with are the ones he is aggressive to. Until now some dogs are still hostile to him. just this afternoon I walked Grant and from about 15 feet away he saw his arch enemy and they both growled and lunged at each other. I have a 5 foot leash and I said no, popped his leash and told him to sit. He obeyed my command and stopped the aggression. The other dog and handler disappeared from sight. What else could I have done better in that situation?

Since the procedure is to go back to the distraction, but the distraction was gone since the handler also wanted to avoid trouble. But my main dream is to make Grant a neutral dog. Is this still possible at 2years old and a with 5 foot leash? Most dogs he is aggressive to is also aggressive to him, unlike your dogs in your training video Goofy, Jimi and Duane. Thank you in advance!

Hi Robert and Janet:

I have a F mal 2 years old

Hi I’m trying to teach my dog to leave the toy and watch me before taking it like live it but it still is the reward. The thing is she gets frustrated so fast, she looses the connection and just goes to do all else but won’t come back just plops in her kennel and leave all. It’s not like I’m training hours it’s a 10 minute thing but Im at loss she is frustrated and I’m at loss.

Thanks for all, she is less reactive now thanks to the videos and this section.

I have a timid/reactive (to humans on our property) 12 month old mal, finishing her first heat. I wanted to wait until 2 to spay her, for her growth plates and bones. Where we live there is not a strong chance of a accidental litter. Our vet recommends spaying large breed at a year-18months and our boarding place wont take her if she isn’t spayed after a year. I wonder if having a few more heats and the hormones that come with that might bring her a bit more confidence/stability? I’m curious about your experience with shy dogs and how spaying or waiting a bit might have affected the dog?

Hi Robert, I have a 5 year old GSD who is reactive around dogs, but fine around people. I have a 9 mos old grandson that often comes by. My GSD has not bitten him, but his anxiety is highly charged. He gets very stressed when anyone picks up the baby or if the baby makes any audible sounds. He is aggressively nosy and wants to lick the babies face, bordering that natural nippy action. I’m not comfortable with him being in the same space with the baby. How can I get him to mellow out and be comfortable around my grandson. Thank you.

I know you have loads of videos about puppy raising but I have yet to see one dedicated to the difference between raising a real protection dog versus a pet or sport dog. An example of the difference would be stopping interactions with strangers at a certain age or letting them get away with more as puppies and not doing obedience / control on them until much later. I would love a video that specifically goes into depth about things like that. I’m getting a malinois very soon and would love to set them up for success in the home as I already have a great trainer.

Hi – my 4 year old spaniel knows an off lead heel well. Do you have any tips on how to proof this behavior around distractions, such as walking past other dogs? I don’t want my dog to break the heel and rush up to other dogs when walking past each other. For me that is unacceptable and unfair on the other dog and owner, but without a lead on to prevent this, I can never be sure he won’t break the off lead heel. Yet with the lead on, I’m never truly proofing the off lead heel in distractions. Thanks for any help

Hello, is it worth e collar training my dog in the UK? As there will be a ban on the collar from next February and I wonder if its worth the investment or time training with it? It’s such a shame as I wonder if my dog will ever have fully off leash freedom in the UK now. Thank you both for an amazing community here, it’s hard to find ones like this in the UK.

Hello

I have a puppy i sold recently had a bad experience at the vets. The puppy was taken to get his shots away from his owners. The puppy was fearful but lashed out with aggression. I am getting the puppy back for three months of training. I want to focus on building the dogs confidence so that it is not fearful when the owner is away. Any suggested training tips are welcome. Thanks

Rob and Jackie

Our GSD is ecollar and prong collar trained and responds well to balanced methods. We want to try sports (nosework and agility) but we cannot use tools for the sports. It’s been challenging. She blows us off, won’t recall and unless we have a treat, she loses engagement. We plan to go back to basic obedience on a flat collar but wanted to see if you had any tips to fine tune her obedience, off leash, without tools or treats. Thanks! We think you’re the best!
