Hi R&J on the 6/28 AMA, we discussed my joining for my 3rd year. You asked about my dogs. I have a 10 1/2 yo male LabX, Buddy, & a 5 yo female PitX, Puddin’. We work on being good family dogs & owner. No competition, but do simple tricks. We have worked up to going to places where there are lots of people & perform them. Mainly to work on engagement with distractions. People seem to enjoy watching us do even a simple series of tricks in often clumsy ways. It is a good way to hone our skills.

I have a 2 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback service dog. I have worked hard with his training and with a pro trainer. We just added a 5 yo Vizsla mix(?). He is untrained. I’ve been working on his basic training and crate training. Perfect dog, except. . . when both dogs are given a rawhide bone, the new dog will take away the service dogs bone while getting nasty with my service dog. He just bit the lip of my service dog. Can this be trained out of him?

I am teaching my 4 month old lab the down command by moving my hand towards the floor. Initially we did this with a lure, but now he is able to do it without. He nips my hand while doing it though. Our trainer at the puppy class says that this will vanish when done more often and combined with a stay later on. I am not sure though whether I will still have a hand when we reach that state. Do you have any tips to get faster to a down without nipping?

Hi R, I’ve had giant schnauzers for 20+ yrs. Training/working has never been an issue. I have a 2.5-yr-old intact male (great temperament) and thinking of getting another male GS. My daughter’s recently moved out and understandably took her male golden retriever (intact,3yrs). “Losing” his buddy, made my giant really lethargic. Some say, having 2 (intact) male giant schnauzers is not a good idea. What are your thoughts? (Perhaps give him more time to get used to being an only pet?) Thanks

Hi Robert & Janet, I have the 2 mal X malmutes, now 5 month old, they are good most of time, crated, walked & trained separately, they do get to roam & play but we intervene if being a pest or start getting wild etc.

Anubis is ok in crate, cries a few times then goes to sleep, Odin will go for hours if left in alone even with food, bone, water, toys etc. we have neighbors & I’m thinking of going back to work p/t. do you think a calm infuser? bark collar? or plain old persistence is best??

Hey Robert, I have a GSD puppy who is 10 weeks old that was found dumped. My girlfriend and I are having trouble keeping him engaged with us because he has no interest in treats, toys, food, and is hard to excite. We’ve used zukes, freeze dried liver treats, cheese, hot dogs, his food, kongs with peanut butter and other things in it, rubber toys, squeaky toys, and he’s had little to no interest in all of it. The only interest he has is a dangerous obsession with drinking water and ice.

Hi Robert, Hi Janet, thank you for your honest answer on positive only training. Today my question is about rescue dogs. I volunteer at the animal shelter near me and they are overwhelmed with increased number of dogs after covid. there’s two small dogs who are inseparable and the shelter is having hard time finding a home for this couple. They asked me if I would take them. With my 5 months Malinoise Tobby and Jack Russell Daisy, is this a good idea? Grace from France

I have an intact 2 year old pure Rottweiler father was imported from Germany. Great around family(, uncles, grandparents, nephews)as well as with kids loves to play with them. However, he is quite aggressive toward people he hasn’t met( new friends). How, do I desensitize him he displays actual aggression; Not just barking or a hesitance toward petting he full on won’t have them near him. Can I fix this? or will I have to separate him during events; doesn’t respond to commands which is unlike him.

Hi, Robert! This membership is fantastic and has supplied tremendous help training my 7 month old DDR GSD. I’m hoping it’s ok to ask here…. I’d love to know if you’re still doing private lessons. Certainly the membership keeps you quite busy. I live about an hour from you, so it would be very doable for me. I’m training this pup as a support dog for my son. Also, I’m traveling to Dallas for a seminar with Larry Krohn this August. Thanks for your consideration and the great videos!

should I have 2 commands for attentive heel (looking at you) while in heel vs non attentive( not looking at you). my command for heel is FUSS..i use stay with me for a loose line walking.

my 1 yr old GSD has low appetite in morning and most times does not eat his morning food but after about 5 o’clock he eats a double portion. can you please elaborate on this topic.

he loves the food ( bc he eats its it double portion at night) and according to vet he has no medical issues.

We have a 7 mth old Mal mix rescue and a 9 wk old puppy. Mal mix is great with people, kids and in the house. Smart, gets exercise and can chill. Issue is leash reactive + obsessive laser like play focus with other dogs. We separate, calm her, reward calm but she goes right back. She wants to wrestle the pup or any dog she is with non-stop. Doesn’t appear aggressive… pup/other dog wrestle on but she wears them down. Obsessive focus/drive. Ideas? We’re trying many techs from your vids. TY!

Hi Robert – I have a 6 mos male Terv puppy and a 7 year old female lab who is a ‘retired’ breeder dog that spent of her life in a kennel until I adopted her 2 years ago. After watching your videos I now know it was a mistake not to crate train my puppy. Forgive me if this is a stupid question but is it ok to crate train the puppy w/out putting the older in a crate? And what problems might I run into in crate training a 6 mos puppy who has been free to roam the house since he was 8? Thx!

Michelle

Hi Robert. My 1.5 year old GSD, Kai, will sometimes get mouthy when he is frustrated during training or doesn’t want to obey a command he knows and will jump up and get mouthy on my forearms. In many cases, if I try to correct him he continues the behavior. What do you suggest I do to stop this behavior? Also, he never does this if he has his prong collar on during a training session.

Irene

How long should training sessions be for puppies? I’ve never trained a puppy before and only have experience with my own grown dogs, but a few weeks ago my dad’s friends hired me to train their two GSDs, one which is a 3mo puppy. It’s going good with the older dog but with the puppy Ive seen NO results. Other problems include: owners hardly interact with the dogs and leave them in kennels all day. They free feed and don’t listen to me when I tell them not to. Im stuck on what to do with the puppy.
