Possessive over other dogs owners

    Hello all, new here!

I have a 1 year 10 month old uncut male pit-lab mix, he has a calm demeanor, he’s with me 24/7, raw fed, been traveling in our RV his whole life since 8 weeks, he gets constant physical & mental stimulation, he’s also very smart obedient & socialized.

We’ve been in Austin texas for the last couple months and it’s very dog friendly here. We often visit off leash parks & trails but he just lost his off leash privilege due to him developing aggression towards other random dogs, not all dogs. He’s being possessive over the other dogs owners, he’s claiming the people as his territory. He knows I’m alpha so it only happens when he’s 20+ feet from me. We have a very strong bond and he knows I would never abuse him so to correct him I firmly grab him by the scruff, pulling him to me, grabbing his snout and yell at him eye to eye, leash & remove him from the park immediately.

Is this appropriate? Do you think i should be more or less firm? Should I smack him? How do we train this out of him so he can earn his off leash privilage again? He loves chasing the squirrels and with living on the road I dont think its healthy for him to be on a leash his entire life.

I should note, when this first started I thought maybe he didnt realize the other dogs belonged to the owners and I thought maybe he felt like he had to protect the owners from the dogs. While that is still a possibility I dont think it’s the case, he’s way too smart for that.

    Hey Aaron,

Due to the nature of your question – I would highly advice submitting this question to Robert’s AMA form. He answers all member questions with a video every Tuesday and Friday. You can find the form on the button of this page – https://robertcabral.com/members-welcome/. You will have to shorten it a bit and just focus on the last page but include the ago and breed of the dog in the question.

You can search the AMA video archive page as well for key words that fit your issue and see if any videos come up from the results. You can scan the results and see what was asked in the questions as well. https://robertcabral.com/member-questions/

Hopefully some other members can chime in on the issue as the discussion forums get more attention.
