handling off leash dogs approaching on walks

    Hi,

My question is, how should I deal with loose dogs approaching us on walks? And how should i train my dog to handle them better? also, what kind of behavior should i expect from him when a dog runs up to us?

I don’t know if Robert has ever addressed this issue on any of his videos, if he has please let me know, thank you.

he is a 6 month old doberman, a little skittish when some dogs approach unannounced, he usually attempts to dash when the leash is on, one time he was off leash, on heel, a dog ran up behind him, he snapped! growled and was pretty pissed … this has made me nervous about other dogs approaching, so I stand in between them, hoping the other dog leaves.. but so far this has only worked with some smaller dogs. large dogs have gotten around me and gave him frights.

this is beginning to happen more and more often, and I’m quiet tired of the owners, I will probably lash out at the next poor soul that has no recall and off leash dog in the park…

Robert has addressed this issue a few times in the AMA section. There is not much you can do actually, if it gets toooo bad you just have to get the dog in the car and go somewhere safe to walk him, Sad but true.
