Hi! My five month old basset hound is reactive to children (especially when on leash). He is otherwise very well socialized, friendly, confident, and stable – but when he sees /hears small children (especially toddlers), he gets anxious, barks, and starts running back and forth like a maniac. I’m not worried at all about him being aggressive, but I know this isn’t great, and could spook the wrong kid as he gets bigger… Any tips? I don’t have kids or a real way to expose him off leash. Or should I just let it be.

When Val was 16-18 weeks a mother + 5 yo child asked to pet her. All was going well until Val licked the kid. The little POS then slapped Val and continue to advance towards trying to hit her again while yelling “no no no don’t lick me”

On a happier note, we go to a boardwalk and to a park that has picnic tables and families use for gatherings to expose my dogs to kids and noisy adults. We just walk of chill out and keep our distance. I do not let them pet my dogs. I have the patches that say “do not pet” and when the younger kids ask I just tell them “he/she is not the petting kind of dog”

Ya was thinking of taking him to an area with kids like just outside a park but then I wasn’t sure if that would just scare him snd send him over the edge in terms of excitement (we are already working hard on focus outside).

That’s awful re slapping your dog and people (parents) should know better. I don’t think Hugo had a particularly bad experience except he was very overwhelmed when he first met my niece/nephew (a bunch of people had come over at once – I wasn’t there as he was being puppysat). I was told he ran under the table with his tail between his legs. He eventually was ok with them (off leash).
