Our 11 week old GSD Otis is progressing nicely but I would like to introduce a herm sprenger prong collar & then eventually the E-collar before he is large. Currently we have him on a martingale collar, he seems to be reacting well, but we are about to start focusing on leash pressure more. I would like to get him going on the prong sooner rather then later. Is there an age you wait to before introducing it to puppies or should I right now. Same for the e collar. Any key tips for the first week?

Robert, my 18 MO Mal is a great dog, we walk w his pinch collar and he see someone, he is the loudest animal within a square mile. I correct him but all he does is looks at me like “why did you do that”. He has gotten better but I cannot stop and talk to anyone in fear of them losing their hearing. Is there something I can do? I’ve been working with him on walking past people and other dogs. Sometimes he’s good and sometimes he’s a puppy. Thank you, hope you and Janet are safe. MSGT/USAF RET.

Robert, prior to finding your work I worked with my dog, a 3 yo Kelpie using other youtube videos from various sources. My dog’s ingrained the use of “yes” as a marker word, after which a treat comes. I used “good” as a bridge word also, but I trained her to not break the command on “yes” and use “ok” as a release word. So I have a separate reward word and a separate release word.

What would you recommend, fix it to fit your system or just keep doing what I’m doing?

Hello! I am house sitting for a friend soon, I have a one year old dutchie and she has a 6 month old Golden retriever. I have never introduced my dog to another dog before (she is neutral). And my friends dog is not dog reactive, just a playful pup. It might be inevitable to introduce them as I don’t want them on crate rotations (but I will keep them separated if necessary). How would you go about it?

Hi Robert,

I’m a big time fan and learning a lot from you.

Regarding the collar I’ve got a problem as prongs aren’t allowed anymore in Germany.

You’re allowed to possess them but using them is forbidden.

What’s the best alternative? How can I work a dog that’s not as sensitive on the neck without a prong?

Hi , we live on a small island in the caraibes where dogs poisoning is a big thing. Often t

Meat is thrown over the walls of the yard to kill dogs before a house invasion ( this is not a urban legend but daily life). How to teach a dog not to do a thing when you are not there?

Katie

Hi, our 4 month Golden has never shown any resource guarding until last night. I had put him in a crate and given him a bone with meat on it. It was his first bone and it had meat we had been eating right before that so I’m sure smelled great. My 7 year old opened his crate to give him a piece of meat that had dropped (we do not usually feed scraps) and he growled and snapped at her. I addressed that with her but want to help dog not get bad habits . Usually we do all hand feeding. Thoughts?

Hi Robert, my almost 9 month old boxer puppy walks quite well on leash in the neighborhood, no pulling unless got scared. yesterday I brought her to a mall, she got scared and pulled hard as she wanted to run away from that place, tremble as well. cooled down a little after staying in one place for a while, but when we moved to another place in the mall, same thing happened, tremble, pulling to run away. what’s the good way to gradually socialize this kind of puppy? Thanks.

Hello Robert, (i am from germany so sorry for my bad english). 1: How much do you work with your young dogs/puppys or adult dogs, i think the consequences of to much work is often underestimated especially for a young dog. I think i am overhelming my dog sometimes. 2: how do you get your high drive dog to rest (eg. visitors come for a longer period). I need to “force” her to rest or she won’t do it, but still she will jump up any time there is something happening. Especially a mal should sleep.

I am having trouble understanding what would be the right level on the ecollar outside with distractions for my 1yr old GSD. It keeps changing with various distractions. At our backyard it’s a 5 on the mini educator. I don’t want to mess it up. I have recalled him from a dog at 20. A stray cat at a street I was up at 30 where he yelped but didn’t come back. I stopped & didn’t use it rest of the day. He is more attentive at a field where we train and play than in the street at walks. Pls help. TY

How would you go about place training on an elevated bed, and providing more structure in the house through this?

My Black GSD is 4 1/2 months old. I am trying to train him but he is not doing that well. I started when he was about 3 months old. He is very good at crate training but not good on recall. How can I get him to understand obedience? Also when is a good time to put him on adult dog food?

Naimbag nga aldaw Robert and Janet. Playing with a flirt pole with a puppy, my goal is to have her make a good grip by moving the bait faster when she’s near it so she has to explode towards it to catch it. If she doesn’t make a good bite on the bait, I want to immediately stop and make her out her bite. What’s the best way to go about this? And do you think this kind of play is a good way to teach her to make fuller bites and increase her prey drive? Dios ti Ag Ngina Robert and Janet.

Hi Robert & hi Janet. Thanks for the last comment. You’re 200% right about Malinois puppy & my 3 yr old,JR- Daisy I have separate them with inclusion gates and put leash on both of them to manage accidents if any. So far none. Followed your advice to the letter & they are integrating to each other. I had not much sleep or do anything other than managing puppy and my JR Daisy. Crate- it works, p0tty- works, redirecting bite – works. Question is what other play can I do with mal puppy? Grace

Our 5 month old female Mal is a perfect crazy, puppy and well behaved in our home even with all of our kids. Outside the house including in the car she changes to a barking, anxiety filled dog. She barks uncontrollably in the car, barks at every thing moving, especially runners, bicycles and other dogs (prey drive?) If she meets the other dogs, people and even bike riders she calms down slightly. Is always friendly to both. What can we do to help her relax. Will she grow out of this?
