Here are today’s Q&A’s

We have a 3 month old puppy. He’s doing wonderful with training, we are practicing crate training and luring. We also have 1 yr old female GSD. They both get 4, 10 minute training sessions a day. While I’m training one pup, is it wrong to place the other pup in its crate? Our 1 year old is fully crate trained, she does great, I just feel bad due to the fact she’s spending more time in her crate while I train the other puppy. Thank you for all your advice, we love your website & videos.

Hi Robert, I do lure or directly distract my dog by placing a treat to her mouth while jogging and passing other dogs, as she is highly reactive. In watching the videos “Bear” Fear Aggression and some others too, you mention “do not bribe” your dog. I don’t believe it is possible to bribe a dog. Nevertheless, I cannot make a connection between what I see in the videos and what you mean by bribing. Enjoy the videos, very helpful but again, don’t get the bribing? Maybe an incorrect word to use? Help?

Hi Robert, love your videos! Any suggestions for leash training a 9wk old pup? I’ve been doing short loose leash luring sessions with her in our yard with good success, but I’m thinking ahead to when she has all her shots and can go on real walks with more distractions. When she’s distracted by scent it’s very hard to get her attention back (I know she’s young). Do I let her sniff? How much can I expect from her? I don’t want to start bad habits, i.e. pulling, but want her to enjoy walks. Thanks!

6 month GSD walks are generally nice on leash. However, when he anticipates park fun (afternoon walk), he pulls. I understand why, but it makes the walks tiring. Will prong collar help in this case? Isn’t he too young? (I watched your prong collar videos and of course I will teach him the understanding of signals before) Should I use a prong collar on every walk, or only on the ones where I anticipate issues? Or should I just keep practicing on flat collar as it is shown on your videos with Maya?

Hi Robert! Thank you for all you do! I have a question about corrections, I have a 10 week old puppy and sometimes I just can’t get her to leave it. I try using treats and interesting sounds and nothing she also doesn’t respond well to leash pressure. I use a flat buckle collar with a leash, would a Martingale collar or slip lead make her respond to leash pressure better or should I get a choke chain or pinch collar? Thank you in advance!

Hi, How do you teach a Mali to stop barking when not wanted, and then bark when you do want it.

My 6 month morkie has separation anxiety. When I leave the house she cries and runs back and forth! She is not crate trained in the day. She has free access to my condo and is very good. She is a quick learner and I have trained her with the basics from your videos. I can get her to “place”, but your video stopped. I was hoping that would help. What can I do? Thank you so much! You are amazing!

My 1 year old Bully knows his down common very well in the house and around the yard. I’ve been using the down verses the sit more when out. He is checking out when I ask him to down (we haven’t practiced this on walks and in parks as much as we should) when I add in the lure with treats he goes down perfect. Is it okay to add this back in for a short period and fade? When I use corrections and repeat the command he is sloppy and slow to down (does not fold down)

Simon

Hi, can you correct me if i understood this wrong. So, when training my German shepherd ,for example DOWN command, first I need to lure him into that position, repeat that multiple times until he understands that’s a good position and also use treats and praise. When the dog already knows what the DOWN command is but wont listen, I need to say NO and correct him . I need to make that a muscle memory so in future he can listen to me without giving him treats every time. I have problem that my dog is sometimes lazy and will do other commands but not down, is that a good approach i said, thank you god bless you

Hi Robert, My 3 month old Cane Corso and I visited the breeder’s house for some socialization with my dog’s sister / mom / grandmother. She was very submissive/fearful to her sister, hid under a chair most of the time. I have few options to socialize with safe dogs due to dumb neighbors, but she does observe other dogs on walks. Rarely, if ever meets. She does fine. She rebounds from fear quickly, but I’m a little concerned when she’s older it may cause aggression, anything I should do?

My Saluki Shepherd has come a long way with his fear leash aggression. We use a prong and e collar. I am slowly getting to more populated areas for walks and he does great on pack walks- However- There are just moments( 1 x a week) where his reaction is quicker than mine and he yelps when he hits the end of the leash and then looks at me and cowers. He then offers the rest of the walk in a perfect heal. He self corrected- but it seems hard. He is nervy- Am I not quick enough at prevention?

How many hours of sleep should a 3 month old be getting throughout the day? His bedtime is 10 pm, wake up is 7 am, (sleeps in his crate) after he wakes up, he plays with his 1 year old sister which is a (GSD). They get along great but I want to make sure that he’s on a schedule. Our 1 yr old, sleeps less, trains more & is able to go out for walks. Our 3 month old hasn’t received all his shots yet (he will 5/6) I want to make sure they both are getting the rest, training & fun they need. Thank u

Hi Robert, thank you for your dog-wisdom. We have a 6 month old Beagle puppy and all goes well due to your training sessions. Crate training went very well and he enjoys his crate. However, in the morning the puppy starts to bark still sitting inside the crate. Normally we would ignore the barking, but coning out of the night the puppy need to potty, but when we take him out, he can still hold for another 10 mins or so. What to do: ignore or take him out. Thank you, Greetings from Holland, Europe.

I’ve heard my dog’s issue described as ‘frustrated greeter’, he reacts badly to the presence of other dogs within 100 meters. His reactions don’t seem to be aggressive or fear based, but a result of frustration from not being able to meet other dogs. He is a headstrong 2 year old mali/gsd cross rescue, a great dog in the house, but his reactions are extreme outside. More like flying a kite than walking a dog. I am working on improving engagement, but is there anything else I should be doing?
