Our 6 month old male lab recently started barking randomly at the front or back door when we are at home. It happens daily. He does this without anything happening outside, no people/dogs walking by. We currently recall him to his place when it happens, and he obeys. Often, he will get up again after a while to bark again. We walk him 3 times a day for 30 minutes, play games and do daily obedience training with him. How can we stop this barking without reason?

Hi Robert- I recently got a 7mos old Male Malinois from a breeder. I’ve exposed him to numerous situations with loud noises including heavy equipment, tractor trailers, power equipment, trains, thunderstorms etc. He has not reacted or shown any anxiety, however with .22 rifle Gunfire, he was shaking and ran into the corner under a table. Would you suggest I no longer expose him to this situation or is there a way to desensitize him to gunfire? We are avid hunters and gun enthusiasts Thank you

I would like to ask for your thoughts on the Shiloh Shepherd.

g teen boys and you asked for video. Wasn’t expecting this behavior so I wasn’t prepared at all. Now she is leashed and we work on obedience and place command. Is this aggression? She never met this boy before but she is getting like this with other boys who come into my home or play football in the yard. I have never witnessed any teasing by the boys. She is great with my own children always, and other people in public- even teen boys.

Which is the best way to desensitize our Mal/ Shepherd pup ( 11 weeks) to loud sounds like a vacuum or the extremely loud sound of our standby generator? Thanks so much

Outrage dog now 4 has always had a very high prey drive. We live in an area where there are dear, wild turkeys, ground hogs etc. if he sees them no matter if outside or inside the house. Runs from window to window barking. Seeing animals on TV especially dogs horses etc results in him running to check it out. He does understand leave which helps some what if he is not really hyped. On lead I can physically correct him. His dog friends he plays great with. Dogs passing the house not so much

Hey Robert! I got my dog, Loki (2y/o mal) during the pandemic to help with my anxiety. His obedience is good and he’s now able to settle in place quite a bit for a mal. Often he can sense my anxiety and will do things like stand and put his paws on my shoulders “hugging” me which is helpful. I want to start teaching him more behaviors to help like nose nudging/alert. Is it too much to try and teach multiple skills at once while refining old ones or should we just focus on one at a time? Thanks

I am a new member. I have been using the word “wrong” with my corrections vs. “no” Should I switch to using “no?” or should I use both with my corrections? Since I am just starting your program I want to make sure I’m doing things correctly. Thank you.

I have been starting to walk my 11 wk old mal outside for a few blocks working on engaging with me. I do not let my dog meet other dogs & work at a safe distance but when a dog barks at her she reacts. My reaction has been to run away, call her, get excited, and reward her for reengaging with me as a way to redirect her. Is this a proper approach when this happens? I am trying not to give many corrections to her and letting her be a puppy but want her to be neutral with other dogs as she ages

Hi Robert, thank you so much for your reply about my 2 year Old GSD involving the flexi lead, I’m just looking for a little more advice, since your reply I just wanted to ask, is her nerves something we can get around or is it unfair for me to continue to pursue my career with her? I’ve noticed she’s becoming more nervy with surroundings when we do security work and flinches if something suddenly moves near her, she also pulled me down a flight of stairs because I accidently touched her tail.

Hey I watched your video on food aggression, but my husky is great with ppl and food, from a puppy I’ve always thrown treats in her bowl while eating, take away things by trading better things. She’s great with people. Doesn’t guard toys. But if she has a bone or food and another dog goes anywhere near it a fight breaks out. Any dog. We limit it happening as much as possible by not getting in those situations but wondering if anything can be done about it.

I have been training with an implied stay whenever I ask for a sitz or shtay. But I also see some people verbally issuing a stay to keep them focused. It’s even more confusing sometimes because shtay and stay sound alike. Should I consider a stay after a shtay at any point?

Hello Robert and Janet, I recently visited a local IGP club with interest of joining. I felt like the club was an ego contest to see whose dog could be e-collared into compliance for the most part. Is this the norm? My pup is motivated and has great focus. She is developing well on obedience and in what areas I know of beginning bite work. Sadly I’m nearing the limits of what I know how to teach her. But, I have no interest in burning her into compliance as mentioned above. Thoughts? Thank you!

I have a newly acquired Dutch Shepherd puppy. When she goes for any type of ride in the car, she gets sick. I have talked to my veterinarian, they have told me that there is no medical reason for this. Is there any way to help alleviate the stress of a car ride to help her so that she will not continue to have car sickness in the future. I have purchased her for a possible future protection working dog and I for see many many hours of her going to be in a vehicle traveling with me.

We have a 16 month old Malinois/Dutchie male. We are first timers and not nearly as prepared as we thought. I’ve been watching your videos and things are getting better. However, when he is overly excited, he starts lunging at us. Usually, we can tell him NO and he stops, but sometimes we can’t get him to connect and we end up bloody. Do you have videos that can help us learn to calm him down? What resources do you know of? Signed up for Larry Krohn workshop in Dec. but worried about trip.

Hi R&J, I just wanted to say TY, vids and reassurance v helpful, been through the ‘So you got a mal’ vids and has reminded me what to expect even from my oversized pup. The just stopping when he gets to the end of the leash is starting to work (too focused on a-b), back on slip lead in high position, rewarding when beside me & checks in with a good or pat, occasional treat. His mouthing is always when in high drive w/toys involved, leaves toy, grabs me & bowl feed, reset needed TY

I have a 2 1/2 year old low drive female Malinois that is a rescue dog. Ive had her for a month, and have been working on her separation anxiety which is quite strong. I was making some progress, but to our surprise, she had a litter of two puppies this week. Her breeder has her and the puppies at her kennel. My dog is not a very attentive mother, and her anxiety has intensified. The breeder has separated her from her puppies due to her wild anxiety. Can separation anxiety be treated?

My 1,5 year old Malinois has a very strong prey-drive. When I take him outside, he is obsessed by the odour/sight of a hare, a deer, a bicycle, another dog or a car. My trainer says I must poke him against his thigh to call for his attention, as he does not react to my voice. A quick pop on the choke-chain has no effect… What is the best way to get his attention?

Robert — We are training our 14 week-old Border Terrier to down-stay with the command “down”. We are using the command “free” to release the down (as opposed to your “yes”-touch).

When should I provide a food treat to reinforce the down: before the “free” or after the “free”?

Thanks!

arguably 2nd question but can’t wait 1 week so 1 word answer if u want! During focused heel is schtay (stand) the right command to have her stop while i continue walking? Schtay is saying stop/stand/stay all in one while heeling?
